Works in vitro, there's a hypothetical mechanism of how it could interfere with the virus in the body. Small studies supported a beneficial effect. Larger studies aren't promising but have methodology errors.

It's a benign medication that's pretty safe. Groups at risk, like people with arrhythmia, shouldn't take it. That's why we have doctors.

Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. But if the possibility of it working outweighs the side effects a patient can elect to try it, which is what is happening.
