The fact you think this is especially ridiculous but thing the rest of the history of mankind isn't is a cognitive bias.
It's very like at some point in the past even more inept people had more power, and even more absurd things were happening. If we lived in the middle ages/ancient times (in any continent, not just Europe) and were forced to follow whatever rituals people did during those times, knowing the things we know now, we would give anything to travel back to 2020.
