There are probably a couple of factors but the simplest way to think about this about shift is because Russia is current fighting the oil war with the Saudis so they can't afford to buy gold while doing this and gold's price has risen from a physical delivery point of view. They have a sizable amount that will get absorbed by the current gold shortage in the West and I am sure they won't mind getting some foreign currencies, after the gold suppliers sell overseas and then into rubles, to help fight the Saudis.

That isn't going to change until some other drug company gets a working product to market. So they aren't worthless, even with the patent loss, they just won't be making as many fat green bags over the next ten years.

Is the next few weeks a good time to put a few K into an oil ETF? I have about £50k in savings that's just sitting and I'm worried about BRRR-induced inflation, plus wagecucking isn't getting me anywhere.
If I buy when oil bottoms at $10/barrell or so I'd surely stand to make gains when it gets back up to $50-100 territory even if it is in a couple of years' time
