Tracking entire populations to combat the pandemic now could open the doors to more invasive forms of government snooping later.
Basically, the real question is: How can we maintain democratically constrained institutions in the context of an emergency like this one (and the inevitable emergencies that are still to come). We have to "Bring code to the data, instead of data to the code" (read: extracting data from users to feed alogrithims, vs. requesting data from users on an default opted-out basis). As IoTeX building DID-based controls that are augmented with confidential computing, it creates a "neutral, anonymized platform" for computation to take place. Our deeply connected society is one where large monopolgies control the entire technology stack, and have given consumers no choice but to give up their privacy and data in exchange for convenience. IoTeX inverts this model, democratizing data and privacy by giving all the controls to users, while mainting the high level of usability and convenience of tech monopolies.
