The issue is thanks to modern medicine you now have lots of old people, who would have died decades ago had it not been for their ongoing treatment. These people are literally teetering on the edge every day, any complication pretty much means a death sentence. Since they die in hospitals, they have to be tested and what would have been chalked up to natural causes in the past is now added to the statistics making it look like a killer virus.
