unfortunately even Walmart is moving away from that. It was a key part of their early business model but a lot of newer stores rent. One of the problems for a traveler like me is that Walmart has a general policy that you can sleep in you car in their parking lots, but it typically doesn't apply if Walmart is renting (or many urban ones due to local zoning laws).
So since Walmart is renting more and more for their stores, there are fewer places to stop. I just liked it for convenient stops on road trips but it's actually causing big problems for truckers. The US really doesn't have adequate truck stops so truckers started relying on being able to spend the night in a Walmart parking lot, but now that's going away so truckers don't have a lot of options and often have to resort to illegal parking and hoping they don't get ticketed.
