Depends on the circumstance, usually you'll get slightly less selling it than if you exercised it. The whole point of them is if you have a lot of, for example, SPY and you want insurance on it dropping, you buy a put at some price where you want to guarantee you'll be able to sell it so you don't lose more money than you're comfortable with. If you don't actually own SPY, to exercise it you'll have to buy the SPY, then exercise, or you could just sell it to some SPY bagholder instead and let him save at least a little dignity.

Yes, if it's in the money, you generally make more than the exercise price.
The value of an option can be broken into two parts, the time value and the intrinsic value.
The intrinsic value is the money you would get if you exercised it, so it only really applies to in-the-money options.

Just calculate out what will get you the most money based on what bids for your option are and expected return from exercising (ie, buying a bunch of SPY and then exercising).

Personally I sell all my options once they net a certain percentage return and then recycle the gains into new options. I'm not trying to maximize gains on each option, I'm trying to maintain a 100% win streak. In the long run I think that makes more money. I've never held an ITM option.

Shorting is the only way to make money in the stock market now. Shorting literally is the new paradigm of investing. All my neighbors and coworkers are shorting the market and we are all making a lot of money together shorting the SPY and longing puts. I’m really popular now among my friends because I’m making so much money from shorting the market, a lot of them are making accounts on Robinhood now because of me. I can’t wait for this bear market to continue for the next 5 years until I have enough money from shorting to buy a house and hopefully a nice car. Shorting is the best guaranteed way to make money in the long term.

I look at what's cheap, usually I go down to where a put is selling for less than a dollar, around the 0.75-0.99 range, and buy that and hold it. Algos will come along as the price of the underlying security drops and brings them closer to ITM and bid up the price, then I sell. I fucked myself last week with calls some I'm done with those. As for timing, I was sticking with 2 weeks out but I think crab season is coming so I'm expanding out to a month to three months out this week and buying sensible options even if they cost more up front. So more in the $3-$10 dollar range for a put. We've still got plenty of room to fall but I don't think I'll make any bets that we go below DOW 10k levels even at the lowest.

There appears to be some confusion about oil. When I say buy oil I mean buy futures directly or ETFs tracking the futures. Do not buy anything connected to oil companies. NO OIL COMPANIES. Betting on oil companies in hopes they will recover with the oil price adds an additional layer of risk that you don't need. Oil companies, especially the most vulnerable US small caps, can go bankrupt. The larger caps can remain in some trouble even if the oil price itself rallies. So don't fugging touch oil companies right now.
