Here's why this is bullshit. Two strains would have been isolated and identified and their different proteins mapped. Also, immune systems make ab to a variety of factors such as cell surface proteins, genome, and other viral antigens. So if one strain induces one type of antigen that produces effective ab to both strains, the other one would produce the same ab to that same shared antigen. It's why the flu vaccine is still somewhat effective against novel flu strains due to shared antigens.
