Why are we nuking the economy over a flu?

>> No.17989603

Flu doesn't overwhelm hospital capacity, resulting in an effective mortality rate near 10%.

A single 25% GDP hit for one quarter to avoid losing that human capital is worth that tradeoff.

The morality rate isn't 10%. Diseases like this spread all the time. Take a look back into history and you'll find some disease epidemic at every point. The difference now is the dangerous co-dependence everyone has on the centralized system that is now being temporarily shut down.

Wake me up when the plague makes a comeback, then you'll have a legimiate reason to fear-monger. If the plague every becomes antibiotic resistant it really will be over, it has a 90% morality rate.

Because we dont have a vaccine and idiots refused to self quarantine two weeks ago.
If everyone self quarantined two weeks ago, the airports shut down for one week and screened everyone, and Trump accepted those WHO tests, we wouldn't be in this situation right now.
All Trump had to do was listen to his intel in January. All the rest of you morons had to do was fucking be socially responsible and take two seconds to think about what exponential growth is.
However because neither party is capable of thinking of math at a sixth grade level, what could have been just a flu is now a bonafide boomer remover thats going to cripple the hospitals and the economy.

Way to go, dumbasses. Congratulations on never learning how to read a fucking graph or corraborate sources so you can actually verify whether news is fake or not instead of ignoring everything.

My country has 1700 confirmed cases and 20 deaths. The real number of cases is much higher so the death rate for the virus is much less than 1%. Italy is the exception to the rule, not the rule.

This is the biggest overreaction in history.

>> No.17991513

>>17989676
Quarter or two for the first wave. If you're 100% expecting it to last longer (curve flattening), you've got way too much faith in the social discipline of the United States to maintain a quarantine. If you're 100% expecting a second wave, you're not accounting for the possibility of treatments or expanded testing.

>>17990054
>>17990086
Even if half of cases are asymptomatic, we're still looking at 10% of people needing hospital O2 and a few percent needing ventilators. And while our lungs aren't as fucked as China or as old as Italy, we're just as fucked because of comorbidities like diabetes and obesity. As hospitals fill up, those 10% die because there are no more beds, nurses, doctors, O2 tanks, or ventilators.

Globalized supply chains have been around for the last few flu pandemics (avian, swine), but Tom Hanks Disease is bad because of that hospitalization rate. And the supply chains themselves aren't making a huge difference because even if the factories weren't offshored we'd still need weeks or months to ramp up ventilator and mask production. You need a Putin-tier intelligent leader (which basically no country has) to have done that early enough to make a difference.

>> No.17991590

>>17991495
If a flu takes 2 weeks to hospitalize someone and 3 weeks to kill them, you want to:
1) project today's case count out 2 weeks to see what hospitals will be dealing with then (e.g. how many beds they'll need)
2) divide deaths into the case count from 3 weeks ago.

>> No.17991618

>>17991534
The correct answer is that it's not a flu. You just won't be able to process that until your local hospital has grandmas dying in the parking lot.

It won't really "stick" in your brain, you know?

Wouldn’t the low discipline you allude to in the first part of your argument negate the potential for increased testing to prevent the second wave?

>> No.17991762

Two factors: people'd be more on edge once they've seen the Xi Jinplague sweep through their town the first time and Singapore/SK style testing can be largely imposed from the top down so all it takes is Trump, the CDC, and local health departments to be on guard and adopt the approach.
