It's gonna be half a year before they start up again, probably over a year before they start to really pick up business to their old amount. I'm also wondering if this, along with my generation's (millenials) love to not spend as much on shit will lead to these industries never really getting back to their highest highs after the boomers die off

I wouldn't put too much faith in medical research and rushed trials like this. I'm betting the effects are low, the p-values are cherry picked, and none of them realize that correlation is not even correlation. Remember that the vast majority of people who get this disease get better on their own anyway, so the drug we need is one that takes someone already in the hospital with life threatening breathing problems and within 24-48 hours gets them breathing well enough to get OUT of the hospital and go back home.

I expect Taleb will start tearing their articles' math apart as soon as it starts getting posted online. Be BEARISH on news about cures or treatments.

You know what it's like to look at a really poorly managed company and think
>Wow, how do they manage to fuck up every time, I will never invest in these clowns
executives that can manage a fine, profitable company into the dirt, that kind of thing.

That's the kind of mis-management I see from the US government this year. It feels appallingly bad. They went with the worst possible combination of pretending things were fine and not shutting anything down until the virus was already spreading out of control, and THEN they chose to basically hit the "Economy Self-Destruct Button" by choice. It won't change the actual number of people who get the virus in any significant way, all it will do is cause more poverty and unemployment and bailouts, which means people dying more from all kinds of conditions because they can't afford healthcare.
It's a mess and it's entirely because of poor response. If we were going to ride the nothingburger train, we should have stayed on the nothingburger train to the end, not jump onto the happening train mid-way.

His divvy is fat. His yield is over 7.30%. His share price is under 29 a share. Don't delay! Let Him save you while the getting is good. Telecom, Media,Film, and more all such a steal now. Before things went to hell He was pushing almost 40 a share all while still pushing a fat divvy and yield of over 5.2%. Yes DIS is cheap and I've bought more but let us be real, the yield is low, even now it's just barely past 2%. Not knocking DIS at all, I like them both as a mater of fact. Stop. You missed the boat. We're going to crab the next week to month until the drops start again. Last week's options strategy isn't going to work anymore. The average politician or deep state bureaucrat is just as stupid, or more stupid, than your average C-suite or corporate board member. Nobody ever went bankrupt overestimating stupidity.

This is precisely why reducing the power and scope of the federal government is important. Stupidity is as stupidity does, but when it's decentralized the impact to the system as a whole is lessened, and even stupid people can copy what smart people are doing in the next state over when it's shown to work.

I've been trying to explain that to people IRL for years, but they all seem to prefer the winner-takes-all, 8-year pendulum style of centralization that we have now. One guy I know takes it further and wants a one-world government...

Cruising is enjoyable and relatively inexpensive compared to many kinds of vacation. But shitty destinations, extra days at sea to pad out the casino and reduce docking expenses, garbage buffets (on some liners which are more boomer oriented), and a reliance on scam shit like "art", the shops, and the dozens of businesses at port which are actually owned by the liners, are going to kill them in the long term if coronachan doesn't. The younger generations don't want elaborate sit down meals. They don't want to sit in a musty casino and blow money they actually worked hard for, and they're not going to fall for your fucking Peter Max scams. What they want is good buffet food available through the day, and a token selection available 24 hours. They want more days at port at the destination, a cruise director who doesn't talk to them like children, more than two styles of club (boomer and high energy boomer), a real TV you can plug shit into in the cabin (seriously, why can't you just change the input), and internet that isn't a joke. They want to go to actually interesting places. Their first trip to the Caribbean will show them it's fake as fuck, and they'll never cruise again. Millennials prize novelty and experiences. If they think they got experience equivalent of airplane food, they're going to be really salty.
I see NCLH as being better positioned for the pivot. RCL has a shot, but they've been leaning hard into boomers for a long time. CCL has had a history of environmental flubs which could turn off many younger people who see dumping oil and plastic into the ocean as wrong. Their subsidiary Holland America is specifically oriented towards the elderly, not a good position.
All in all, cruise lines are high risk. The prices look nice, but any of them could capsize. They'll all need to pivot into a new market, and they're going to be short on cash for years. None will be building new ships any time soon. Place your bets wisely.

Other than the bad parts about this virus and oil shit I've been enjoying myself. Work is practically dead. So I go in, put up my feet and load e-trade for pretty much the whole 8 hrs I'm there. So it's like a vacation to me. Gas is cheap as hell so in that respect I'm saving even more on fuel. Stocks are in the shit, so I'm been going on spending sprees. But I've put a cap on it though. I've only spent enough that when the Govt check comes in. the check will cover my "loans" that I've made to myself. If things really get nasty, oh well, I'll still be getting paid while sitting at home cause there's no way in hell the state won't pay it's workforce even if it's shutdown cause the resulting lawsuits and bad p.r would be flying if they did. Plus it's in the regs, the only way we don't get paid is if the state goes broke. Nothing in there about forced shutdowns or anything else.

>Once Cruise liners set sail again how long until it bounces back from this dip?
I was excited for the cut rate prices too but read up on previous crashes. The cruise industry moves as slow as their ships. This hit right before their peak season for this year. Trips are usually booked a year in advance. They might lose over two years.
PLUS the key demo for cruises are boomers. Younger generations don’t want to be trapped on ships. So with covid killing their target demo to boot the growth here will be limited.

The only exception I can think of is the Norweigan cruises because it’s used as transport due to their god awful coastline and road network. Their oil rich state might intervene to bail them out plus their future demos are better due to the transport angle.

Bottom line; there are much better cheapies that will turn around faster.

>You know we could just cut the military budget by a tiny percentage to keep the economy afloat
Huh, well lets look at the numbers!
>FY2020 Defense budget: $718.3B
https://comptroller.defense.gov/Portals/45/Documents/defbudget/fy2020/fy2020_Budget_Request_Overview_Book.pdf
>2019 USA GDP: $21.43 trillion or $2,143B
https://www.bea.gov/news/2020/gross-domestic-product-fourth-quarter-and-year-2019-second-estimate
Goldman Sachs estimates a 25% decrease in GDP this quarter due to the virus and shutdowns. If we assume that our GDP this quarter would have been one fourth of last year's GDP (a low estimate), that would have been a quarterly GDP of $535.75B. And a 25% reduction in that is a total reduction of $133.9375B. That would be a total reduction in the ANNUAL military budget of 18.65%, or the QUARTERLY military budget of 74.59%.

Is that really your idea of a tiny percentage of the military budget? Keep in mind that that military spending is ALSO part of the economy, and shifting money from military spending to other spending just shifts the pain from one economic sector to another. Lots of defense contractors and government employees, including military, would lose their guaranteed paychecks which would drastically hurt consumer spending and directly increase instability as now these people would also not be able to pay rent, bills, or buy food.

tl;dr, you're a fucking idiot please don't post ever again you stupid leftist.

>The Greater Depression of the 21st century

There's a repo crisis that started last year, pension funds are insolvent, the government is bailing out every industry, dozens of CEOs quit their jobs in anticipation, senators sold millions in February, the unemployment websites are crashing do to load, mass layoffs haven't started, supply chain hit hasn't fully manifested yet (companies will run out of reserve stock soon), quarterly earnings are next month, hmm what else? yes there is a global pandemic.

Oh right, there's a housing bubble, student loan bubble, sub-prime auto loans. What else? OH YEAH. All growth in the market since 2009 has been fucking stock buybacks! OH RIGHT any the fucking pandemic hasn't even slammed the hospitals yet. Do you realize by this time next month the average hospital will be swamped with elderly people who are literally suffocating to death? Picture it, and the media coverage.
We haven't even priced-in all the people who will be drawing out their 401ks to pay for mortgages, rent, and food.

OH yeah, and the food shortages. OH YEAH and the national GUARD is being DEPLOYED because of the very real possibility of riots in the major cities. OH YEAH and there's going to be an Occupy Wall Street 2.0 coming that will be militantly violent with a fully built-up army of anti-Drumpf cattle manipulated by strongest anarcho-communist black block America has even seen (as a reaction to the Alt Right).
Yeah mate this is the bottom for sure... for sure... for sure...

Prepare yourselves for a lost decade.

Whereas I don't believe chinese people are competent enough to create this type of operation without fucking up colossally, I do however believe they caused the pandemic due to unhygenic and inhumane treatment of animals. They truly are the bug people who would eat dead bodies like during the maoist revolution. Last cases of canibalism in china actually date back to the 1950s. What esle can be expected from a country that created the death by 1000 cuts. What do you think happened to the pieces that were cut off? hmmm? makes you think.

the masks stop YOU from spreading your saliva and the virus in your breath when you're sick. Since the virus has a asymptomatic incubation period you might not even know you are spreading the disease. That's why people wear masks dummy. That's what they are used in Japan and China. The only masks that have a guarantee of close to 100% are the ones in hazmat suits that the CDC uses. Everything else is designed to stop you from putting your dirty fingers around your mouth, and to stop you from spraying everyone around when you cooooof.

It's funny how the Great Depression got that name because crashes used to be called panics and someone was like "this is just a depression."
The Great Panic of 2020 will be known in the future as Jussaflu.
