gold is also very soft and gets damaged if you hold it loose at high purity.
gold doesnt break down or anything, but you can take off flakes pretty easily if you mistreat it.

Seems like a coin in a box would be more likely to be a fake ... I mean if I was selling a fake coin I'd put it in a little box and say it's "certified and sealed" or some shit.
I appreciate the insight.
If gold is likely to get damaged (or more importantly lose some mass) by getting bumped into harder things, I guess that makes sense.
Or just keeping it "nice" by protecting it from acratches.
