I mean, kind of. The recovery was built on companies doing very little real investing in their future, and a lot of market pumping by buying back their own stocks. Things were only JUST in the last year or so improving for the average worker in terms of raises and whatnot. Companies kept hand wringing that they couldn't find workers when the reality was they just didn't want to spend more on raises to attract workers. When unemployment hit lows, companies had to compete for workers, which was just starting to drive up wages.
Now with this drop, its going to go to shit all over again. People will lose their jobs, lose any chance at wage increases (some have even taken pay cuts), etc.
And what will the government do? Bail them out yet again. This cycle has absolutely got to stop.

Airlines and other companies use profits to buy back their own stock to artificially pump prices and drive down supply instead of reinvesting it in actual infrastructure or keeping a cash reserve to deal with emergencies

Many went billions into debt borrowing money to buy back more of their own stock. It's the height of arrogance and greed and stupidity but it makes short term shareholders happy so of course they all did it

If you're a retail investor and a bull you're going to be double fucked. You're going to lose your job, and then you're going to lose your investment capital too.

You go bullish, the market goes bearish, you're double fucked. You go bearish, the market goes bullish, you keep your job and can easily recoup your losses.

It just makes sense to have a portfolio based upon puts, at least as an insurance policy, unless you already have enough capital to survive 3 - 4 years out of work.

Inflation isn't a concern because any nation that threatens the dollars dominance is going to get killed. The U.S. will pull its punches in almost any circumstance, but if a country threatens the dollar they will reduce it to ash without mercy. North Korea for example can talk about nukes and all this other shit, but if they said "we're going to a create a pan-Asian currency to compete against the dollar" the country would be toppled in a month. As long as this is the case, the USD will always be strong.

The two main options are Questrade or Wealthsimple Trade. Wealthsimple doesn't charge you commission to buy or sell stocks, but their problem is that they don't allow you to hold USD so you're going to pay them around 2% every time you buy or sell US stocks, which can be more than the amount you save from not paying their commissions. Questrade is the better platform in general and you'll be able to do more with it. Wealthsimple Trade is more like Robinhood.

TFSAs are managed, you pay an investor a fee for it and choose only a minor strategy. Operations can take 2 business days to process and are limited to changing strategy, pulling out or buying in. Also, if you take money out, you're not allowed to put it back in until the next calendar year (vs your yearly limit).

You can probably get away with it providing your account value stays under a certain amount and you're not making hundreds of trades per year. The CRA has gone after people for what they view as TFSA 'abuse', basically using it as a platform to speculate instead of invest. They consider a bunch of factors in their determination but it's all subjective so they can fuck you any time and they could force you to pay tax on everything you've made.

If you're going to be actively trading, it's wise to get a margin or cash account and do it in there instead.
>>17922066
Yes, you can trade options. I got approved for it quite easily but that may not be the same for you. I think they base it on your account size and income.

If tomorrow ends in a pump I'm gonna buy puts for Friday.

That's a terrible idea and it's a good way to get fucked a second time when people finally realize that the US isn't actually going to see a million Coronavirus cases and the market overreacted with the current drop. The cases in Iran have peaked. Soon it will be the same for France, Spain, and Italy. The US is only a week or two delayed from them. The average incubation period is five days, soon we'll see the effects of social distancing and better hygiene.

Bulls can't be right for much longer, or it all turns into worthless Monopoly Money™ anyway.

I know this no consolation to those logging into a portfolio down so much these last weeks that the losses alone could buy a new boat, but there it is.

Sucks man. Kroger opens at 7 a.m now to allow stocking during the night/early morning. I get there at a bit past 7. Not to crowded. TP has been almost depleted already. I grab two mega 4 packs and a single roll 4 pack plus a 6 roll pack of PT. PT is almost gone as well. Add to my stash, got enough now to last till end of April or a bit longer.
