They will accept stocks as collateral for a loan.

If a big bank with a shitload of stocks sees no bids without crashing the price, they can "loan" it to the government and then default on their loan.

Imagine the market price is currently $100 but you have so much to dump that you'll only get an avg of $50 per share if you sell it all.

So instead you "loan" it to the government in exchange for $100 per share and then you never pay back the loan and let the government keep the share.

You effectively just traded all your shares for $100 each instead of $50 each. Fuck

Ways to make money from the market:

1. Capital appreciation (buy low sell high)
2. Dividends/income (random number determined by the board of directors that can be zero any time they feel)
3. Options (calls puts etc)-you buy a contract or sell a contract with the expectation of the market moving a certain way. You can also create "spreads" which predetermine your gains/losses.
4. Shorting (borrowing of shares at a high price which you "cover" when the shares drop in price resulting in a profit of the difference between what you borrowed them for and what they dropped to. Conversely if they raise by $1000 you have to cover them for the new expensive shares) Also some more rules apply but that's the gist.

Bankruptcies will probably get acquired by larger oil companies for very cheap prices, if there are any. Most of them that I've seen are trading under book even if they do have lots of debt. Overall I think most oil companies are very safe bets right now since the oil price war won't go on forever and prices will eventually rise above the level of shale profitability again. This isn't like back in 08 when shale cost $60 to produce a barrel, shale is profitable at $30-40 now.
