I popped in to grocery store to buy onions and mineral oil this evening. Around 8pm. Grocery store not busy but it looked like it had been ransacked by a team of crazies with oddly specific interests earlier in the day. Grocery store was well stocked except for a few conspicuous items:
>soap from the pharmacy aisle sold out but regular soap ignored. Apparently people think soap marked antibacterial is better for virus???
>nitrile and latex gloves
>tylenol and aspirin
>frozen hashbrowns???
>frozen pizza???
>potatoes (fresh)
>dry pasta
>rice
>cream but not milk?

Tons of canned goods looked untouched. Plenty of toilet paper on the shelves. Ordinary bar soap looked 100% in stock. Fucking weird, man. People are weird. Today I, an autistic man with a couple other comorbid crazies on top, felt like the sane one.

There's no reason for everyone to max out his 401k regardless of his circumstances. In your case, if you don't make enough money to max out your 401k, that's a sign that you probably don't need to. A better rule of thumb is to try to save a certain portion of your income for retirement, like 15%. For someone who makes six figures, maxing out their 401k is a more reasonable goal, and probably more necessary for them to maintain their current lifestyle into retirement. As for me, I only contribute enough to my 401k to max out the employer match. Then I contribute to an IRA (which has better investment options and doesn't charge outrageous management fees) or HSA (which has the best tax advantage), and even after maxing those out, I would still not contribute extra to my 401k. I would rather pay down the mortgage on my house, as mortgage interest savings are a tax-free gain just like any positive capital gains in a retirement count, and paying down a mortgage gives a guaranteed rate of return (assuming you stay in the same house at least), which is not something that stocks or even can offer.

I suspect that panic buying is a meme to a large degree, insofar as the vast majority of people are not really buying excessive stockpiles of toilet paper. In fact, what is happening is that, whereas normally people buy toilet paper at staggered times as they run out and need to replenish supplies at home, you have everyone wanting, in order to be stocked up and avoid future grocery trips, to buy just a normal quantity of toilet paper, but all at the same time. The vast majority of people are not really buying multiple years of toilet paper, and once this initial stock-up period has passed, shopping activity will return more or less to normal.

Anecdotally, the only store that I go to that seems affected is Costco, which is out of certain items (toilet paper, disinfectant wipes, vinyl gloves...), but most things are normally stocked, and the only thing out of the ordinary I've seen at the regular grocery store was a 2-per-customer limit sign posted by the milk, which was well stocked.

>also assuming real estate isn't in a bubble that may deflate.

That would be more of a concern, if I was debating whether to get a new mortgage on some property as an investment. I already have a mortgage. If the market price of my house went down by $50,000, that's a $50,000 loss if I sell my house regardless of how much I paid down the mortgage.

>>17810775
>I'm not paying down my mortgage (30yr fixed 3.875%) any faster than the normal payment schedule.

Depending on your goals and circumstances, you might want to reconsider that. Here's some sample questions you might ask.

- On any extra you pay down the principal balance on your mortgage, you save on interest at a rate 3.875%, and you don't pay taxes on those savings. If you buy bonds in your retirement accounts, do those bonds give you a 3.875% yield?
- If you pay an extra $10,000 toward your mortgage, you have $10,000 in equity in your home, even ignoring compounded savings on interest payments. You can cash that equity out whenever you sell your house, or alternatively through a HELOC or refinancing. If you put $10,000 into your retirement account, when can you get that $10,000 back?
- Which is worth more, $1,000 a month in stock dividends, or $1,000 savings from not having to make mortgage payments anymore?

This is just my speculative opinion as someone who was you'd. I suspect that Costco's sales will at the very least not be hurt by coronavirus. Some of the increased sales recently may really be a increase in total sales due to people buying things they wouldn't normally buy, e.g. people buying disinfectant wipes and wiping down their door handles everyday, when they wouldn't have done that before coronavirus. Other sales may just be people buying more stuff now rather than later, which is not really a total increase in total sales over the long term, like the toilet paper example. Another cause of increased sales could also be people buying from Costco rather than other stores because they want to stock up. For example, someone normally buys toilet paper in a four-pack at Publix, but, due to coronavirus, decided instead to purchase a larger pack from Costco. In short, I don't think Costco's sales will be hurt by coronavirus, but I also don't think that coronavirus has added any long-term value to Costco's stock versus before.

There are only two countries that are slowing down: China and Korea.
China's case number outside Hubei slowed down 2.5 weeks after the Hubei lockdown
Korea's case number slowed down after they basically finished testing all those cult members
Any western countries doing the same when there were still only hundreds of cases?

Yes, if you actually look at the other western countries outside of those on the graph, you will find plenty where the growth is not exponential. For example Canada got it's first cases in January and today the amount of confirmed cases is just a few hundred despite having much better testing than most other countries.

>“Don’t believe the numbers when you see, even on our Johns Hopkins website, that 1,600 Americans have the virus,” Makary said. “No, that means 1,600 got the test, tested positive. There are probably 25 to 50 people who have the virus for every one person who is confirmed.”

WELLLLL Looks like it's gonna be another limit down morning, unless President Blumpfkin has something planned.

Should I sign up for futures trading? I could just add it on to my Schwab account (with their absolutely FUCKED interface)

Anyone know how futures opening works? If everyone is set to sell the futures when it opens, can I even get in?

Seems to be one day green, next day red. Study the SPY charts and go from there. Paper trade to practice if you don't know what you're doing because it really can be like playing with fire

Sorry guys, I keep posting the shit out of this board, but big question:
>are any of you able to tie volume movers of specific stocks to the fed pumps? Either solely for 3/13/2020, or ideally the other days with the obvious pumps?? It would be curious to know if they are pumping the same stocks, or different. Also, is there any way to capture which brokers are making these purchases, and then discover the clients?

This is China's long term gameplan. Greedy western capitalist buisniess arrogantly setting up shop inside a COMMUNIST country? Does that make sense? May as well build your factory in a gators jaws. China will soon announce that all buisness factories and assets in china are now nationalized and owned by China. Consider the US debt partially paid. China will then make their own iphones and tesla and sell exclusively to Chinese and to other countries at "national debt markup." While US is busy dicking around in the dessert the merchant have put all the eggs in China's basket.

I didn't say it was a nothingburger, I implied that it will be less severe than most people think. For every one rational person here with the same belief, there are at least a dozen retards who claim this is going to be the new apocalypse and the market will drop 80%, yet you have no problem with any of that because it fits with the narrative that helps make you money. This isn't about who is being reasonable, you're upset because I said something contrary to your position against the TSX but you're too stupid to understand that.

You are mentally like a child and have no business even living without supervision, let alone giving other people advice.

You're not the only one. Issue is, as per my maths and the repo data, the fed has deep pockets and someone is using that to make euge purchases of stocks 1T+ USD on Friday in the Dow alone. So the question is: for next week to be red (which I think it should be) WHO will be selling their stocks and WHY?? --any guesses?... bueller? bueller?

You guys really don’t know what happens when short-sellers close their positions?

I haven't really noticed anything worth pointing out. If you have a margin account, you can link it to your TFSA account and get more margin, but you're playing with fire if you use it. Another thing is that you'll want to go into your settings and make sure your trades close in your choice currency so don't have to convert it later on since they charge a fee for that. If you want to buy stocks pre or post-market, you have to set your order duration to Good ‘till extended market (GTEM).

Canada has an aging mostly white population that are taking it seriously, immigrants probably less so. I don't think lack of testing has been a problem, anyone can go to a hospital and get it done with no direct cost to them. They've done over 5000 tests and only found around 250 people with the virus.

There's been less hoarding and panic than some other countries but the concern remains strong Some things have shut down, but it's not that notable.
