A lot of people don't know this, but he was already rich by the time he got into the oil refining business. He made a fortune in the dry goods business.

Even of we know what it is, it's impossible to just rush in anymore. The Fed protects the big boys, no room for up n comers who don't want to lick government boot.

My excuse is I’m too comfy. I’ve never had life kick me down so hard I didn’t have anywhere to go but up. The people that take risks and bet it all have little to bet or lose from the start.

Applying a rare case to the masses. Especially when there was less government regulation. Want to make an aviation or space flight company, here pay us millions in government permits. Oil? Nah regulations that make it hard for the little guy while big companies got in before the regulation made it impossible and wouldve likely bankrupted all those big companies if the regulations were around when they came to be. Solar energy? Yeah sure get a load of high tech equipment and large group of people who have experience in this field. Spoiler also expensive.

Rockefeller celebrated ‘job day’ every September 26 to commemorate his entry into the business world,” Parr writes. Later in life, he writes, Rockefeller said, “I often tremble when I ask myself the question: ‘What if I had not got the job?’”

This and also I didn't say he didn't grow up poor. What I'm trying to say is that is was so fucking easy to make it back then. America was still basically a frontier in the 1850's and 60's. All you had to do was be White and smart enough to convince a bank to give you a loan. Also, Rockefeller, like Warren Buffet, had incredible timing. Rockefeller made a fortune in dry goods because he started his business 2 years before the Civil War broke out, and demand skyrocketed for his produce, making him a millionaire in todays money.
