When you buy a Bloomberg terminal for 25k/year, you're buying availability and secure access to an exchange. Now as traders you should ask: why would anyone spend 25K/year on a Bloomberg terminal? The only way to make/lose money through retail brokers is if you take long positions and you insure your position by marrying it with a PUT when volatility is low when potential bad news breaks out. In some circumstances your PUT option is probably more expensive than the gains you get on the underlying.

Good luck accessing your account when the VIX spikes, and good luck making money in the long term when you can't guarantee a price on a market downturn.

Threadly reminder that sober epidemiologist estimates are 60% of Earth will be infected with Corona Chan if we fail to contain.

Threadly reminder that we have failed to contain.

Threadly reminder there will be no vaccine:
>Immunity against coronaviruses appears to be short-lived. Epidemiologic studies of coronavirus infection have demonstrated high reinfection rates. In human volunteer experiments, infection with a 229E-like coronavirus only induced effective immunity short-term because rechallenge with homotypic virus, the 229E serotype, resulted in infection and illness. In addition, under certain circumstances, vaccines against animal coronaviruses have led to enhanced disease

So here is where things get ugly.

If there is no bad news this week, everything will go straight up, probably back up to 29,000+.

But, if we have a sequence of bad news, that is where things start to get ugly. Crashes require a sequence of consecutive, negative events to cause a market decline, making them very unlikely yet very real. Low interest rates make markets more fragile as it pushes portfolios towards riskier, higher yielding assets. I wouldn't be concerned unless you're thinking we're about to have more bad news in the coming weeks.

I lost everything.... I over leveraged myself on SPY PUTS which are basically worthless after today (loss of -90%+). The worst part is I couldn't even cut my losses because Robinhood was down. I just found out this was because of a leap year coding error that they knew about since 4 years ago and neglected to fix. Do I have a legitimate legal case to sue Robinhood to get my money back? They cost me thousands of dollars because of an issue THEY KNEW ABOUT BUT NEGLECTED TO FIX. That can't possibly be legal. I think I would have a strong case since I can prove the same issue occurred 4 years ago. How should I approach this and where can I get cheap legal advice?

So, you can't look at this from a strictly fundamental perspective as market does not move purely on fundamentals. Market is made up of a variety of people and institutions all buying and selling for different reasons to achieve a single goal; taking out more than they put in. Some are going to benefit from a drop in price, others are going to help that drop buy pulling out in order to defend against loss. Still others want to buy on speculation of rising price, either in short term or long. Some try to time these moves, others just average in money on a regular basis regardless. There is a very complex push and pull at work there and it results in price fluctuations even if the mean trend is headed in a steady direction. Under conditions of high volatility, everything is amplified with high trade volume and people positioning massive quantities of money looking for moves in either direction. Econ people sometimes refer to this as "price discovery". Add in shifting values of major commodities and relative value of major currencies, you get big swings.

More simply, I like to say the markets reacts to a thing first, then figures out whether it overreacted or underreacted and figure out where it ought to be later. If you are the pure fundamental persuasion you will find yourself very frustrated by the difference between what the market does and what you think it ought to be doing.

It would take a lot to get interest rates down to 0 in the short term. It would encourage more risk taking behavior on the part of banks who have no place to park their money (other than dividend yielding stocks and higher yield bonds)

Once they do hit zero, I would imagine that they would need to write/push legislation to allow for negative interest rates in the US.

If interest rates move down too fast, banks may park their money in treasuries anyway since a fast move in interest rates makes treasuries more valuable anyway. Bond purchasing results in more debt for the US government. A runaway effect could turn the S&P into another Nikkei as everyone gets squeezed into stocks and ETFs.

It's now just a matter of when. Jerome can pull a YOLO and cause interest rates to rise, prematurely ushering in another recession before we enter the black hole of negative interest rates. He will be hated for the rest of his life, like Volcker.

Yes it is. Have you ever had student loans? The way it works is they calculate an estimated cost of attendance which includes tuition, books, room and board, etc. The loan money is sent to the school and applied to your student bill. Anything left over is refunded to you as a check so that you can use it to pay rent, buy groceries (room and board), buy books, etc. Technically using it for things like buying TVs, cars, or stocks, is illegal, but no one ever checks so it is very common spend the money on all sorts of stuff.

and your falling for one of the oldest tricks in the book. make literally hundreds of slightly different funds, after 20 years scoop up the survivors and advertise them as having some special sauce.

I think there is something to learn from history here. The current macro environment is similar to what Japan went through in the 1990s, which went through it's own QE driven economic boom. In Japan's case, the bust was a slow crawl downwards, and nothing like the crash seen in 2008.

There is one difference. In 1990 every other country had positive interest rates. Japan never completely recovered from 1990 either. Instead the Japanese banks fled to US bonds. Europe is now in the same boat, and the US is fast approaching negative interest rates. In the short term, it could rebound since the markets took a shock last week. Multiple shocks may cause stocks to tumble as they have many times before. Typically this can involve one or more bear traps as the markets tumble into recession. If the US and China drag each other downwards through the use of treasuries, we will see a global depression.

It's all a confidence game in the end, and so far that confidence lies with Trump.

I don't believe that will happen. The market is casual now. Its all robots, algorithms, and strike prices- along with knee-jerk, emotional normies who have no idea what they're doing. No such thing as a bull trap, or any prediction model that made a lick of sense anymore imo. Thank you, Cramer and online investing.

The biggest issue around ETFs is that it generalizes price discovery. Rather than having the market do the research to figure out how much the equity of a company is worth in the short term future, it bundles up all the equities underlying the ETF. Now that you have this basket, buyers will buy the basket thinking that the value of the basket will appreciate. Unfortunately there may be bad apples in this basket, and the ETF fees pay the people to pick out the bad apples from the basket. However, if they don't pick out the bad apples, you're basically paying for bad apples in the end, along with everything else. Read the prospectus before you buy the ETF/ETN/ETP before you end up like all the shortvol's last week.

You're in a bubble when the market values complacency [buy and hold] over price action [people/algorithms and hedge funds accurately pricing things and encouraging this behavior]. This is when the Fed steps in, and slaps everyone in the face.

Medallion Fund was open to employees only and is one of the best funds on the planet. You don't have access to it, what you have access to is a bunch of shitty funds that won't beat the market and will charge you 2% on top of it. Even with above average performance, MER is a huge consideration.

It's not about that. Mutual funds and stocks are the actual investments (with mutual funds having a more complicated structure). But the actual accounts (401k, IRA, brokerage, whatever) are like the middle men through which you invest. Each middleman comes with its own tax implications.

My biggest issue with 401k's is that these vehicles discourage price action. 401k's are bagholding accounts with promises of continued growth until you're 59 1/2. And then you're told to not time the markets [don't sell/don't make your portfolio more conservative during a bubble]. You're being taught the inversion narrative and to be good little goys.

Yes, I understand the fundamentals are still good, but when factories shut down that doesn't matter. In a month we will be hit with a nationwide shortage of manufacturing goods, everything from machine parts to plastic spoons. Doesn't matter what the consumer confidence is or how much the fed pumps, if theres no materials, theres no materials! This doesn't even take into account the potential for productivity hits in America from corona virus. I'm in Seattle, they just announced 6 dead this morning. Fear is everywhere here.

Any general advice on this? I've looked into treasuries, muni bonds (for the tax savings), riskier bonds etc. The money I have to play with is all in non-tax-advantaged accounts, so the only thing I came up with are the tax savings (muni) or low turnover (index). Everything else would require me to actually know what I'm doing.

The real answer is to issue ACH disputes through your bank for the deposits within 60 days and force them to come to you.

Close your account and open a new one elsewhere if you fear they may respond to your chargeback.

Chances are good you’ll just be banned from the platform and that’ll be it.
