If you must buy calls they need to be LEAPS. I would never advice somebody to expose themselves to expiration dates and theta in an environment like this. Nobody has a crystal ball, there are only the charts to go by. It may go back up this week or it may be lower next year, nobody really knows. Your best shot is try to position yourself as well as you can. Buy some on each dip and sell the retracements just don't sell it all so you have something when it finally does go back up.

A virus with a morality rate of 0.4% outside of Hubei is going to erase nearly 6 years of growth?

>in Hubei Province, the epicenter of the outbreak, the death rate reached 2.9%; in other provinces of China, that rate was just 0.4%. In addition, older adults have been hit the hardest. The death rate soars to 14.8% in those 80 and older; among those ages 70 to 79, the COVID-19 death rate in China seems to be about 8%; it’s 3.6% for those ages 60 to 69; 1.3% for 50 to 59; 0.4% for the age group 40 to 49; and just 0.2% for people ages 10 to 39. Serious complications rate, where someone is either too sick to work, or sick enough that without medical treatment they'd die, also matters.

yep, this virus is actually a perfect storm for prolonged periods of fear/anxiety. up to a month incubation period, you can transmit it while in incubation. 3 weeks to get better. people who have severe cases need help from respiratory machines to aid in breathing which takes up to 2-3 weeks. this will overwhelm hospitals and make them turn people away. people will begin dying at home because of unavailable treatment. news everyday will be "100 more cases today", "50 new deaths", etc. people will stop going to major gatherings (sports, concerts, movies, restaurants)., etc., now the supply chains are torn up and will eventually sooner than later lead to shortages. even if it doesnt play out as big as it could, it will still have severe effects if it doesnt burn out like SARS did. this one is more infectious and tends to last longer. again, the next two Q's are already written and they will be misses. the question now is how hard are local businesses going to be affected - im assuming they are going to be severely affected. why do you think the gubernment hasnt tried to startle the public until now? when they've said today "its very likely to be a big breakout and to start preparing to make amends for not being able to go to work, school, etc".

Here's my guess other than gold was already overpriced as fuck when you bought it at the ATH, people are starting to believe that they cannot cling to a safehaven and need to go liquid to service their debts, buy food etc as they are no longer making gains on the stockmarket. Or they see everyone else jumping out of the market and demanding cash so they are going liquid so they have lots of cash in a high cash demand environment where they might look to buying cheap investments. I mean there are plenty of reasons to not buy gold at the ATH desu. I've been selling gold buying silver and the selling of gold has worked out but not so much of the buying of silver (yet). I suppose lack of industrial demand for silver might be a factor too with places closing down in asia.

But you have to understand there are people out there with tens of billions of dollars in their portfolio, who have rules like 'I don't want gold to be more than 5% of my portfolio'.
Which means as it goes up, there will be massive sell offs of paper gold. Be patient, zoom out. If it still hasn't recovered a month or two from now then you might have something to worry about, but gold isn't like Tesla where it goes parabolic in one direction or the other. It's just memes you dunce.

The very act of trying to prevent and treat is, by its nature, necessarily disruptive.
*Any* disruption will cost money, because it is a non-optimal deviation (as opposed to a say a short term upgrade cost for a greater long term efficiency) from the standard.

If you want to completely remove the emotional aspect, consider your analyasis on whatever sector (production, shipping, tourism, whatever) as if it were new temporary government mandated safety measures to prevent a problem that doesn't yet exist.
In such a situation the firm is trying to reduce greater long term costs by paying to take preventative measures so you're necessarily creating cost but not creating value (you WOULD be creating value relative to less safe competitors but this scenario is one of uniform government regulation; everyone not in compliance is going to be penalized in some way so adaption will or will be perceived as ultimately being uniform)

Do you understand now? Take out the emotional side, take out the infinite risk hyperbole of apocalypse, there are still significant appreciable measurable quantifiable market forces that can be assessed here.

real talk: the problem is more about government's reactions to the virus than the virus itself (i.e. shutting down factories, not allowing people to return to work, stopping air travel, etc). not many people at all have actually died or anything, mostly just some elderly.

it'll fuck up stocks for awhile though, that's for sure. because global economic growth is going to take a hit. the world isn't gonna end but yeah, don't go long for awhile, that's for sure.

honestly this will all be good for the world in the long run, a year or two's time. china's getting fucked big time and everyone is going to pull whatever manufacturing and business they can out of there. if they really did create this in a lab they really fucked themselves by releasing it on their own population, accidentally or otherwise.

companies were already pulling out of china due to the trade war tariffs. who the fuck is going to want to deal with the corrupt communist plague center of the world? no one. it'll take time but it's gonna be a massive boon for latin and south america when Trump signs the new trade agreements coming down the pipeline and we basically move manufacturing from china to other 3rd world countries that aren't as soulless and totalitarian.

actually it's the Chinese being retarded and living like in medieval times. eating unclean wild animals that nobody checks for disease, using no refrigeration, spitting everywhere and (no joke) not even using soap to wash their hands.

on top of that you have communism and a corrupt, lying government that could have prevented this but didn't react before chinese new year because it would have made them look bad

also, back to the chinese being retarded, they probably wouldn't have obeyed anyway because they don't think rules apply to them. which is why the government need to literally barricade the doors of some sick people because they don't stay at home despite being sick, thinking the rules don't apply to them

The market was way overweight and this has been talked about for some time now, it is only a routine dump, with the added weight of a pandemic scare.

Whether or not Corona is the real deal is irrelevant, this market WILL freefall in either scenario.

Nothing wrong with holding Viacom especially if you got the shares cheaply thanks to the Virus. Consider: even post re-merger they are still a mid cap company, room for growth there. They pay out a decent divvy. Thanks to the virus they are also a nice take over target cause the shares are cheap as hell. Look what happened to Fox. Dis swallowed them to get the content. Who has deep pockets and and a pile of cash that needs to be blown before the Govt "takes it"? Look at FB, Govt said you owe us a few billion in taxes, I'm sure a lot of tech companies would much rather blow the money on stuff that could benefit them rather than just hand it off to the Govt. Even if Viacom don't get bought, when the rebound happens your still in the green collecting a Divvy. Could be worse things you know.
