I only make 80k a year in nyc and my rent is very expensive even with a commute from outside of the city. I only have 20k saved from 3 years of working. How do I even make it when my hard earned money is so hard to save?

Move to a Lower cost of living area to get more in after tax pay.

I moved from boston to providence, still got a bump in salary but had offers for 90-100k.

I got more time to do side hustles now.

Unless you’re getting fucked by student loans 80k is workable in nyc.

Live in a cheaper area, get a roommate or two, cut on spending (esp food/drink).

I doubt very much that your basic cost of living + expenses only allow you to have U$556 leftover a month when you earn ~U$6.660/month. You need to manage your shit better

Yes there are. I live in the expensive part of Brooklyn and I still pay 1k in rent with 2 roommates and can get a meal for $5-6 dollars.

He should still have about 5k take home after taxes, healthcare, etc. before rent.

I’m assuming he’s getting screwed by student loans or something.

Yes I have 5k leftover but 1700 is rent and then 300 is my train cost so I really only have 3k left and that goes fast

Where are you living that you pay $300 for the train? MTA 30 day unlimiteds are 127.

Also tour rent isn’t awful for your income by NYC standards, you’re just not managing your money well (again unless you have student loans). Even then you should be able to live on like 1k for basic expenses, pay 1k in loans, and save your last 1k.

I was making a little over that recently and there wasn’t a huge issue. Put away 2.5k a month.

80k in nyc is like a janitor, no?

>> No.17372462

>>17372391
No, people don’t make that much more in NY for the same jobs. It’s just that there tend to be better jobs in cities like it and a lot more networking opportunities.

80k isn’t an awful salary, but it feels like less mostly because of rent and taxes.

You need to start writing down all your expenses and sorting some shit out. Learn how to cook instead of buying food in the streets, stop going "out for coffee" and spending U$10 on a freakin beverage, be pickier in regards to price when you go to the supermarket (you don't need to buy the best/priciest brands)

all that shit adds up

ah. I figured it would be like California and tech. Cali fucks up the national averages with that kinda thing, because they are stupid douche cakes.

Leaving the NY area was the best decision of my life all around. I instantly started saving more money, spent less time commuting, had a better apartment for less, insurance costs cut in half, the benefits are endless. Unless you're a rich banker who needs to see people everyday there is no reason to live in the city. Your quality of life sucks and you pay three times as much as you should for it.

Every large American city has a good night life and decent food because of how many people have moved in the past decade alone. Every large American city has hot Midwestern blondes trying to make it that are desperate for a rich guy to come pick them up. I also feel much safer. There are multiple ways to get out of my metropolitan area and many wilderness places to camp out with much less people to compete for resources with. Laws are less restrictive and I can finally trade the cryptocurrencies I want to. I'm already set to buy my first home and plan on buying the second soon after. There is no way to make it in NYC.
