Now for some stupid fucking reason no one could have predicted, that very stock has gone up +100% while your contract is still valid (not expired) and is now selling for $600. These contracts are now worth $100 each with $95 being the profit you've made ($100 - $5 you paid for them).

Because you're a fucking maniac you bought 10 000 of those contracts for $50 000, you can sell them for $1 000 000 (10 000 * $100), which is a profit of $950 000.


The opposite thing happens when some says:

In this case the stock has to go down from $300 to $195 for your contract to break even.


If you're the guy that paid the $5 for the contract, you can never lose more than you paid per contract. If you're the guy issuing the contract however, your losses could be practically infinite if you're selling stocks that you don't own. Because now you have to buy those stocks at market price just to turn around and sell them for $100 less.
