Not so much a gimmick, but a spreading of a belief or idea. That goes for pretty much any indicator or trend lines. People generally use and believe in the MACD and RSI, which makes them sort of a self fulfilling prophecy.
Same goes for channels, resistances, supports, etc, they're only ideas/meme lines that propagate better than others, but they've been around as long as markets themselves.

bruh, have you actually done any eth transfers using metamask with a next to nothing fee rate? Shit takes like 30 seconds to 1.5 minutes... and ETH is in it's, what, 4th year? yes, you have other coins like nano that have "instant" xfers, but they sacrifice in other areas: centralization, security (chain pruning) and no incentives for workers.

I think ETH is pretty well balanced in this "triangle" of speed, security, and dev/tech.
