I'm 18, in college and realizing my engineering degree in 3 years time will only get me to a job I hate but the pay will probably be well above average. At this point I just want to make enough money so that I don't have to work, or atleast work on businesses and side gigs I actually like doing. I'm seriously considering dropping out and working a trade job and investing in stocks and crypto so I can make it. This. I'm working a software dev now in a bad situation, with our division being sold, the buyer likely a private equity firm, no work coming in from the company to our office so nothing to do, potential firings on sale, etc.. Despite this, all my co-workers due is be hyper negative and defeatist, complaining about, "a sinking ship," and saying things like, "Any hill looks good to die on these days." Meanwhile, I'm using all the open time we have at work to study and do personal projects in new languages and frameworks/libraries.

I'm so sick of hyper self defeating people. 9/10 people I meet are totally fine either just working an unfufilling job for pay and consooming media and internet full time. Most people I know outside of work are also above average intelligent. I can't imagine not striving to have exciting, novel experience, seeking new knowledge, and learning and doing cool new things. This is a good idea. Consider also the following.

I got a BS in CS and spent my entire 20's moving to different cities with my GF at the time, travelling, "no money, hitch around with a pack, stay at random punk houses, couch surf, etc." style. Every few years, I would work a tech job, mostly shitty jobs, with income usually around $60k, for 7 months or so, to rebuild savings from travelling, working part time jobs, like dog walking, sometimes also.

In my final 20's, I got a $91k job doing network admin type stuff through a college friend hookup. Then, I got into crypto in laste April 2017, traded for a year, and got a bit more /biz/ minded. I took 4 months to brush up on programming, studied a bunch, did some practice projects, and got a dev job making $87k. Now I am 32.

So consider the following. First, I spent my entire 20's, when I was full of energy, and youth, and nomadic, idealistic spirit, to travel, move, and do all sorts of cool forest projects. Then, at 28, I got a $91k job I didn't care about, and at 31 I got an $87k job I do care about, and that sets me up for many other good jobs. After taxes and expenses, I can save about $45k a year. With proper investment of that, I can soft retire by 40 with $500k saved, doing random short term 6 month or so dev jobs every 3-5 years, to give a little extra boost, as $650k at 40 would be ideal.

Consider using your 20s more as a wild time too. As long as you keep your resume up with occasional jobs, even if short term, you can still retire at a young age, but also make better use of your youth as well.
