This. It won't matter if we stake or just rebuy cheaper, I think the result will roughly be the same.
Might actually be better to rebuy into the -70% candle on the day the staking rewards get unlocked.

I know the conditions for having your rewards unlock (6 months, less with 80%+ of total supply staked), won't they unlock at a different time for everybody? Are you expecting a lot of people to reach unlock at the same time?

This is exactly what I'm betting on. I'm going to stake my existing stack because it's small but I'm going to be ready with my finger on the button the day that massive red dildo appears and buy.

>> No.16826697

>>16826402
I'm sure a lot of people started staking on the first day the wallet was released, so a lot will unlock on the same day. However the staking numbers go up every day, so obviously there will be some differences. But regardless there will be a lot of Fantom unlocked in the month of July.
I'm not really sure why people are saying there's no chance of the price increasing. As more and more is locked up in staking, the market is going to move easier. Meaning if they drop any major announcements in the next 6 months, the price could go up very quickly. This would then cause some people to pull out their stake, to get a guaranteed profit.
Ultimately what I'm saying is, as long as the price can rise in the next 6 months, it will mitigate the amount dumped come July

Just to expand on my point, let's look at a hypothetical situation.

Let's say it's early May. The Fantom team has been making moves, and the price of FTM is now 4 cents. People staking now have a difficult decision to make.

1) Pull out from staking. Here you would forfeit all rewards, but get a guaranteed 4X profit on your investment.
2) Wait until July to sell. Here you keep all rewards, but you have to pray the price holds for another 2 months, and that you can beat everyone else to market come July.

As you can see, option 2 actually feels pretty risky in this scenario, and I think a LOT of people would pull out early to guarantee profits.

>I haven't heard anyone else talk about it, although I'm sure plenty of people are just doing what I'm doing
Probably true, although at the same time it feels kind of crazy to just let your FTM sit idly when you could be earning rewards.
I'm considering having a 2nd wallet with a smaller stack. That way I can still stake the extra FTM, but I'm not as hesitant to pull it out should the price rise quickly.

Can you stake separate stacks from the same wallet (and potentially withdraw separately)? I know you couldn't before the wallet. I might start staking my second stack at some point, but there's a 7 day wait when you want to unlock so I'm not sure I want to risk burning rewards only to watch the price crash in the following week

>> No.16827186

>>16826402
you're correct, poster you replied to is a pajeet fudder. everyone started staking at different times so there will be no one moment where there's a massive red candle due to staking rewards.

>> No.16827227

>>16827186
I'm not worried about a giant red candle, but a lot of people probably did start staking around the time of the wallet's release. I know you can check how much is staked right now at stakingrewards.com, but is there a chart or anything that shows the history of the amount staked?

>> No.16827307

It’s six months from the start of the mainnet for everyone doesn’t matter when you staked. Or when 80% is reached decreasing 1% every week. I think it will be unlocked due to the % staked before the 6 months if they do any marketing at all. Please Chen

>> No.16827360

> To encourage users to stake FTM, and thereby increase the security of the network, rewards are locked until the minimum staking amount of the network (starting at 80%) is reached. This minimum staking amount decreases every second, on average, 1% a week).
Rewards are locked for a 6 month period from the launch of the mainnet.
Note that the above rewards schedule is subject to change, and we aim to have the structure determined by the governance of the network in the future.

>> No.16827546

Cool thanks anon. Am I right to say rewards won't decrease again until 50% is staked? Maybe I should try to get another stack staked before that happens

>> No.16827641

>>16827546
Are you referring to that table in the article? I think those are just example numbers, not hard thresholds. I think it's as simple as the more FTM staked, the lower everyone's rewards get.
For example, right now we're at 713 million staked, and rewards are at 65.82%

>> No.16827656

>>16827641

It’s all game theory just like mining. Yes, people could dump after unlocking/unstaking, but that means the remainder of stakes would immediately get a much better return, so people would buy back up to stake and try to capture those rewards, and the cycle goes round.

So if you can manage to be amongst the first dumpers and manage to buy back at a lower price, then you win. But if you sell after a dump then you may end up buying back at a higher price.

Andre has setup the system this was on purpose and it works very well because we’re all talking about it. At the end of the day, just like with bitcoin mining, it’ll probably be most profitable just to always stake and never sell (until you reach your goal).

>> No.16829145

I have a question. I thought the 6 month lock is from the date i start staking? So if lets say i start staking in few months i will still get the same unlock date? So its just specific date to unlock all and doesnt matter when i start?

>> No.16829160

>>16828352
This. For the love of god this. How much you holding fren?

>> No.16829371

>>16829145
it's from the date of the mainnet release, not the date you start staking.

>> No.16829520

>>16829371
Yes. I think if the stake were actually locked it may be a more fair system, but at least there is a 7 day lock on the coins before you can withdraw the unstaked coins. Using a “sacrifice earned coins” method instead of “lock staked coins for a fixed period of time” seems fine. It remains to be seen which of these two options works best.

This way, there is not only a penalty for unstaking early, but also for unstaking at all. Not clear on whether you still earn coins during the 7 day lockup, but it would be great if you didn’t to further incentivize people to continue staking. These characteristics make it so that you have many things to consider before staking/unstaking which in theory reduces this worst-case-scenario of everyone rushing to unstake and sell en masse.

Again with all these factors to consider, the best option may just be to stick it out and stay staked. Think of staking and unstaking as going long or short, and swing trading. At the end of the day, unless you’re a very good trader you probably will end up losing money/ftm.

Very interesting. I have to admit I didn't think about it that way, but it makes perfect sense.
My next question is - when the 6 months is up, what happens next? I know the staking rewards will be unlocked, but how will staking work after that? Does a new cycle begin, and rewards can only be claimed every 6 months? Or is staking essentially unlocked from that point on?
