16819262 No.16819262 [Reply] [Original]

Okay, I'm a college student who has $5k to their name. I want to start getting into investing. I have some crypto coins that I bought in 2013-16 that I haven't touched since.

Can I start investing? I spend like $350 the whole semester and I have a minimum wage job. Is silver a good place to get started? Seems like the smart thing to do since stocks are so high. Should I just sell the little crypto I have or also begin investing in crypto again? I only am really holding BTC and Eth. Should I invest in link?

Please help, I need to pay my college tuition and support my family.

I feel like I'm in hell and I don't think wagie life is going to pull me out of this situation soon.

How?

If you need the cash to pay college tuition and support your family, don't invest it or only invest a portion.

If you can stomach investing and holding it there for 3 years minimum, then go for it. Only invest what you can stomach losing entirely.

I only spend money on buying some food from Costco - I get lots of food from the dining hall. I don't drink and I have rich friends who I uber with and will pick up the tab

I have steady hands. Is it even worthwhile to invest in something with as little money as I have though? I'm currently patenting an invention I made, but the university is cucking me out of any profits I could make from it.

Do you know how I can make some good side cash? I'm tutoring also with my job, but I'm not sure what else to do

They literally own all the IP because I did it with their facilities. Feels bad that a teenager got cucked by some 60 year old fat cat lawyers, while I'm scrambling to support my family. I might unironically drop out and try to start a company. I need to put my brother through college too.

> AB

Li had agreed to pay AB a total of 50,000 renminbi, or roughly $7,200, for the radio. He knew AB was already under investigation for export-related crimes and believed AB “was attempting to get rid of the radio in light of AB’s entanglement with law enforcement,” according to court filings.

Don't throw all of your perfectly good BTC away on scamcoins and shitcoins.

Silver is probably a bad idea because it is largely an industrial metal and we're going to be in a recession within a year or so. Stocks will also likely crater.

Right now, IMHO, is a time to stay safe. BTC is safer than ANY other crypto. ETH isn't bad.

>I'm currently patenting an invention I made, but the university is cucking me out of any profits I could make from it.
Decloaking slightly. Actual OP attorney here. Are you an undergrad or a graduate student? Undergrads aren't usually under an obligation to assign patent rights to their schools. If you haven't already signed the assignment agreement, you might be able to force them to share at the very least, or even retain rights completely.

If they are paying for it, or if you did the research at their behest, then you are less likely to be in luck.

This isn't legal advice and I am not your attorney. No attorney-client relationship has been or can be formed from these off-the-cuff remarks on a Ukrainian matrushka doll pattern forum. I recommend that you talk with a patent attorney in your area to investigate your options.

Work at something other than a minimum-wage crap job?

If OP is patenting things, then OP must have some semblance of either a solid STEM education or truly incredible design skills. Patents are mostly about engineering, sometimes about implementations of serious math, and nowadays are almost never any longer about "business methods" since those have been mostly wiped out by Supreme Court decisions, in particular Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank. It's very unlikely that a university would bother with a registered design aka "design patent" in US parlance, so, STEM.

Anyway, my point being, OP is clearly not a mouthbreathing waste of otherwise perfectly good protoplasm.

OP, you can certainly try investing in stuff, but here's the thing: all investment carries risk. Your time horizon is clearly very short-term -- you want to make a killing NOW to pay for school and food. Guess what? Investment also pretty much requires a long time horizon. Investments typically play out over years, not days or weeks or months. Yes, you can get lucky and nail the timing on a stock just before news comes out, but unless you have inside information (which is illegal) that's just luck. Normally an "investment" makes around 8% per year, maybe 10% if you're amazing at it.

All the shitcoin stuff, especially the scams being pushed here on /biz/, are basically worthless. If Bitcoin doesn't fail or get regulated out of existence, it's going to be one of the few to succeed, and one of the key points in its favor is that there is no Sergei or Vitalik to drag into a U.S. district court on charges of illegal securities trading. I would say that Ethereum has a chance -- it actually had an interesting use-case with ICOs, except that nearly all of them were scams and the SEC came in to tell the scammers to cut the shit out, thus blocking a large percentage of the potential victims.

(to be continued)

>> No.16824012

>>16823940 (continued)
You aren't going to magically double your money every month or week or day using any sort of "investment". Typically you'll get about an 8% gain over the course of a year, maybe 10% if you're fabulous at it (which, if you're asking for advice here, you aren't -- it takes experience to be able to read balance sheets and spot scams).

The shitcoin market is dead. Bitcoin is recovering its market dominance after nearly being destroyed by Jihan Wu, Bitmain, and their cabal of Chinese miners trying to preserve their ASICboost exploit. It's gone from a low of 38% market dominance to a current roughly 68-69% (changes every time I refresh CMC). But the REAL dominance is much higher, at least 80%, because the scamcoins like BCash and BSV are dead -- they just refuse to admit it.

That market dominance is going to continue to rise as shitcoiners finally realize their "superior technology" or "instant confirmations as long as nobody in the real world is using our coin" isn't going to cause them suddenly to displace Bitcoin. So, if you throw your actually good cryptocurrency away to buy whatever is being shilled, odds are you'll see it wiped out over the next year or two.

Any sort of traditional investment is pretty near peak right now. You could make money, you could get wiped out. Most likely, even if the Federal Reserve throws the kitchen sink at stocks, they won't see more than another 20% in broad market gains before sanity reasserts itself.

You could try gambling with options -- puts on Tesla, calls on Boeing -- but these are time-limited and you could just as easily get wiped out 100% when they expire before the market reasserts sanity on their valuations, or you could still end up losing because of the options premium you had to pay to make the bet.

Best thing to do in your limited timeframe is to stick to BTC, cash, or cash-equivalents, find a better job, finish your degree(s), and get out into the employment market for real.
