I think this reveals a breakdown in the trade-war negotiations, since in my opinion, our aggressive posture towards Iran these past two years was truly motivated by an attempt to prevent China from gaining influence in the middle east since they are more friendly with Iran than the US can ever be due to historical circumstances over the past 40 years. We've made our bed and we're allied with Saudi Arabia and Israel and against Iran no matter what, but if we allow Iran foreign relations to normalize that will allow china to get a foothold in the ME and give them a huge economic opportunity.

To elaborate, China would like to create a system parallel to the petrodollar system, where crude from India, allied ME countries, and africa is traded in Yuan instead of USD.
