Multiple coins are trying to do what ATOM is doing, but ATOM is better for a variety of reasons (Cosmos already has 83 projects using it)
Ethereum will come out with Casper (similar to what cosmos is doing) in 3+ years so no need to worry about it and Vitalik already likes cosmos

But basically, it all goes back to the byzantine general problem. Bitcoin has 3 layers, Network, Consensus, and Application. Ethereum fixed application but not Network and Concensus. ATOM solves those. The problem is worth billions.
