So imagine Tim (banks who keep everyone's money) has a $100.

Tim is feeling pretty cool because he keeps his friends money, and he gives out and gets back and gives out some more. But even when he gives, he always has the most money of everyone in class.

So Tim recently has given his friends money, but they aren't giving money back all the time, which makes Tim sad but he's a nice kid so he keeps giving money.

Tim's dad (the fed) comes in and gives Tim a dollar every day.

So now Tim gets a dollar every day, but his friends keep not giving money back that Tim gives his friends.

Slowly Tim's friends are getting more and more money and sooner or later everyone in class has $100 and Tim isn't so cool anymore.

Imagine if you had all the shares. You would have 100% control of the company. You can then force the company to buy some other company you're invested in or you can force the company to give dividends. Whatever. That in a nushell gives the shares value. That fraction of the company represented as a single share. If people expect the company to double in value next year then the shares will likely double since, again, they represent fractional control over the whole operation.

It's mostly a representation, but companies also hold their own stock and sometimes sell that stock to finance something which keeps them in business.

So imagine a company suddenly needs to pay a bill, which they can't, so they decide to sell some stock so they can. Now the stock is worth next to nothing, and even if you sell stock you can't pay the bills.
That's when you file for bankrupcy, but not before the CEO and everyone on the board sells all their fucking stock and gives themselves a 10 million dollar bonus for the year.
Now there's a family whose dad figured he can get his kid into college by selling his stock 10 years down the line, except that stock isn't worht fuck shit no more. So little Timmy doesn't get to go to college. How can that dad tell his son that? How can he explain that the coming period they won't get to go on vacation, because dad just lost his job?

Companies that generate tons of cash and don't have anything better to do often pay dividends or buyback. Stock buybacks essentially give higher valuations to each remaining share (the price goes up) because the remaining shares get a high piece of both the profits and ownership

Whenever growth companies start doing buybacks its often a sign of a maturing market or other problems. You really want the company using their free cash in high value projects that generate returns, that's the whole point of investing

Ech, ok, so... price and value are not the same. Price is what someone's willing to pay for it, value is what it's worth. On the stock market, like everywhere in life, it's not the same thing.

Let's say someone in Nigeria is selling you a gold bar for $500 000. You pay that price. Does it mean it's worth $500 000? Maybe, but maybe not. Maybe it's just (most likely) a scam, and you just paid a price of 500k for something that's worth $30 at best.

What changes on the stock market is price, not value - despite what knuckleheads of "experts" and "analysts" are trying to tell you . Value changes IRL, based on developments in/around a company. Price on the stock market tries to approximate it - and the future of it.

In your given example the cause and effect are swapped. If the factories will get closed, sales grind to a halt, research stop THAN (or as soon as people will realise that that's what's going to happen) price will fall to $1 - not the other way around.

Whether the USPS is dying longterm or not has no impact on the fact that WKHS will potentially be replacing their entire fleet of trucks. It's a one-time gigantic deal. Those trucks are supposed to last forever by design.

When a customer goes to buy a fractional share Robinhood the company will actually buy the share and divvy it up among the interested parties and maintain the leftover on their books. When customers go to sell fractional shares, Robinhood will sell out as the amount of fractions equal a whole share and so on. Sounds risky to me. What time frames are you stressing over? I've found that if I trade somewhat on technicals and less on trend I have to be prepared to act slower, over a longer time frame. You might predict the bottom, but the bottom might form over 3 days and you are unlikely to buy the absolute bottom. So it might look like what you bought is dropping, but you shouldn't be far off the actual bottom, just a day or two of gradually closer and closer lows to endure if you are correct. Same with the highs when selling. When I've made the decision to take profit I try not to be stupidly greedy. Sometimes I've lost a dollar a share or so potential profit as a result, but better sold in profit than missing the plunge or watching it slowly fall over the next two days wishing I hadn't been so greedy as my potential profit falls and falls. It can help to buy and sell in stages if you are uncertain. Just slow it all down.

Of course when I trade based mostly on trend it is about much shorter time frames. I am however assessing my 'day' trading as mostly I make very little money in return for quite a lot of effort and I accrue bags over time when I get things really wrong. I'm fine holding them because this super risky shit tends to be no more than 2% of my total bankroll, but as a result I'm taking that risk and putting in that effort for about $60 a trade.

Like great. I've managed to 'win' the last 10 times, but it took two hours a day and I've now got a $250 SNSS bag. Shit like that.

Shares are traded amongst private entities. Individual (retail) and institutional (tute). The company doesn't see the money. The value in a stock price, inflated or not is in the shares that the board own and/or in any future issue (creation of new shares).

The market should in theory be perfect, but like any market contains inefficiencies. These inefficiencies are what some investing (traders) aim to exploit to make money. Others are investing because they believe that storing your money in a company is a good way to grow it because the company will do something.

Value is linked to dividends which is where a share holder is paid a proportion of the profit the company makes or through increase of share value.

Urgh why am I explaining this shit.

Say you start a company. You decide to be a public limited company. As the owner you own 100% of the shares, but the company is its own entity under law. You work for the company and have 100% of the dividends (if you pay them) and 100% of the vote. After a while ... you decide to sell a proportion of the company to fund something or other. You sell 10% as 1,000,000 shares. Your company has assets, income, expenditure and when it is all worked out it is worth $1,000,000 on paper so your 1m shares are worth 10c each. Some people buy them and trade them amongst themselves based on how well your past, present and future performance.

Metrics for this ... Profitability. Market reach. Potential market cap. Opinion of current products. Potential new products. Cash on hand. Debt. Stock on hand. Turnover. Potential Turnover. Previous and proposed dividend payments. The confidence and background of key staff and so on and fucking so on.

If I have $1,000 doing nothing and I think your company is a good gamble then I'd buy 10,000 shares in the hope that you go on to have great success and as a result the share price will rise based upon the positive metrics of a company doing well. You benefit because you still own 90%.

I spent the first six months listening to /smg/ is how. And also, I experimented with everything to experience firsthand what the dangers were like. I lost money on pharma stocks, on penny stocks, on buying options, and on selling options. I even lost money buying safe stocks because I was impatient. I basically moved everything over to MO when it was around $40, and stopped paying attention for a while, then set up a strategy and started doing calls seriously again at the end of September. $200 more dollars and I'm green baby.

I've just read that Intel's new server line (aka the main money maker) is FUBAR since shit is getting postponed AGAIN, even their 7nm process with target 2022 might continue the shitshow that is their failed 10nm process with even more delays.

Meanwhile, TSMC's 5nm yield is improving faster than expected, while their 3nm process is coming out a full year earlier (late 2022 now).

This, combined with the trade deal going forward and the release of a new GPU pushed the price today.

Sure, you can sell, but if you try to time the market, you might get burned. The outlook for AMD is fantastic and Intel is a gift that keeps on giving.
