Something happened to trigger the cascade.
No one is sure exactly how it happened but someone here the other night (as it was happening) posted a single wallet dumping huge blocks successively. Not sure if it was a coordinated dump or if it was stop loss triggering the cascade rolling downward...we may never know.
-HOWEVER-
It is suspicious that the selling abruptly stopped at a level just below where it was relatively stable for quite some time and then it pumped, only to drop back to that level...appears to be heavy end of year manipulation...doubly suspicious is the drop coordinated with a strong pump in only one other crypto (hint:it was chainlink)...makes you think they're manipulating and rolling it into another manipulation. Why people buy cryptos after seeing this is beyond me.
