Yeah I tried night shift, but most of the places try to low-ball your pay, and expect you to do make-work, not because it's actually important, but they just want you to pretend you give a shit, which is my absolute favorite thing about being a wagie, pretending you aren't absolutely miserable. I think it’s still in the air but at this point all the parties involved that can make decisions have already decided it’s not going to the schools. The basic debate is homeless vs low income housing projects vs all the other bullshit they like to pull now.
The ironic part is that teachers can’t even afford to live in the city, there are shortages of special education teachers, for example my friend is a sped teacher she says that they basically just doubled on paper how many students various staff should be able to see. By law many special ed students have supplemental services like pullouts for literacy and other problems, and by law each kid is given different amounts of time that they need to be served.
It’s actually impossible for these supplemental services teachers to meet all these kids need on the case load, so the school district are not providing the minutes required legally in hundreds if not thousands of cases. Then they blackmail the teachers basically by saying if you complain or speak out, we can fire you because technically you are supposed to be capable of fitting 26 kids in one week, even if some kids have a shit ton of minutes needed.
It’s crazy fucked in the schools, there are so many insane kids fucked up because of shitty parents, and kids lose out on educational attention because teachers need to control the insane ones.
Why not suspend them? Well, there’s a new policy as of a few years ago from sacramento itself that says you can’t suspend black kids I shit you not. See black kids are the ones that are always willfully defiant, and you can’t suspend the willfully defiant anymore, so they kid can be screaming and cursing in class and you can’t suspend them.

Sacramento also sent out an explanation informal, saying that they would scrutinize and teacher who suspends black kids for any reason even other things besides willful defiance. This is not public knowledge, but teachers have complained on blogs and stuff about this paper that went around a few years back. The ban on willful defiance suspensions is public however
