Since nobody else is chiming in I'll help you with one more. It's a little bit more complicated but it's a fairly safe way to play with leverage. The rundown is you want something that is highly likely to go up in the longterm with little chance of catastrophic permanent loss. The answer to that is index ETFs like SPY which is based on the S&P. The problem with index ETFs is the gains while steady are relatively small. Than answer is leverage. The problem with leverage is the possibility of a margin call and losing all your money. The answer to that is call options. The problem with call options is you have to deal with a little thing called Theta or time decay, i.e., merely holding an option for a period of time causes its value to go down by a certain amount. The answer to that is to get an option that has a very long expiration date. These are called LEAPS. Buy deep in the money SPY LEAPS that expire 2 years out. Deap in the money ensures that the Delta is high so the option contracts go up close to the same amount as the underlying SPY ETF. The math is simple. You buy a 2 year SPY call option which will run you about $5500 giving you a delta of something like 0.93 meaning when SPY goes up $1, your option goes up by $0.93. So you are buying about $30,000 worth of gains with $5,500 of your cash giving you effectively 5x leverage with no chance of a margin call since you aren't actually borrowing any money. After a year, you close the contracts and rebuy another 2 year LEAP. Keep rolling that and you maintain your leverage and never have to worry about a margin call. If you want more leverage up to like 10 or 15x you just buy at the money or out of the money. Look into it. The Google phrase is "SPY LEAPS"

If you are looking at a straight up index I would maybe consider IWM, the Russell 2000 ETF. For a LEAPS play, everything being equal you'll pay about half what it would cost you with SPY. I'm not a big fan of options on sector ETFs but that's just a personal bias you may find that works for you.
