Basically your best bet is to hook up with artists who already have a following and do support gigs for them, and get signed to their vanity labels and generally ride their coattails.
Music videos help since most people discover a lot of their music via Youtube.
Like all content industries the real money is not in making the content but in distributing it, Spotify and Google Play Music use the 'Long Tail' business model.

To be honest entertainment isn't as hard as people think if you're willing to settle for not being a star / working a support gig / never making a killing. If you throw yourself at the industry, and I mean if you really throw yourself at it, you will land somewhere.
