My roomate says that 40-60% of daytraders make a profit/living and that it is not a risky thing at all

Are there numbers to show him that he is full of shit and that daytraders for the most part lose besides a very very small percentage

There are a handful of academic studies that show daytraders and typical daytrader strategies invariably lose everything, but don't waste your time. Encourage him to trade his way to riches and ask him how he's doing every couple of days, that will shut him up in less than a month.
