Essentially it's an external data feed into a protocol and/or blockchain - without that oracle the protocol and/or blockchain would not be able to access the data. ETH for example, cannot access outside data for it's smart contracts and can be extremely inefficient, especially as blockchain grows on a global scale, data will even more important as things become more and more automated.

What people don't realize is PoW can be an oracle itself and there are methods already patented for certain markets and sidechain data. An oracle was used on BSV to fix the fatal flaw that is in BTC and BCH. That flaw would not have been discovered if the oracle did not warn several BSV devs about it based upon external data.

Anyone can make a fake news stock market price off chain API but nobody will pay for it. So api providers are economically incentivized to put good info on their api.
