The only explanation many jump to is the concept that Satoshi desires anonymity, as such he is not going to reveal himself.

Anonymity, not privacy, anonymity.

Craig's discussions emphasise the difference between the two as a method of goading the real Satoshi to reveal himself so the real Satoshi can be taken out.
