>currently unemployed
>offered a job
>employer says I can start 9th of dec, 16th of dec or 6th of jan
>I say 6th of jan due to need to relocate
>a couple of days pass
>I get the contract/offer through
>realise I can start sooner

Would it be weird to ring them up and ask to start on the 9th? Would I be causing people a bunch of hassle?

No, worst case scenario is that nothing changes. Just tell them the transition went smoother than expected. This will probably work in your favor to start earlier. This is assuming that they are aware that the reason for your time selection was relocation.

Telling an employer you can start sooner if necessary makes you look good to management. They may not bring you in on the 9th, but it shouldn't be an issue for you.

If you need the money then go ahead and ask to start earlier. However a lot of people take vacation in December which is why it’s better to wait until the new year. There’s nothing worse then starting a new job when most of your team is on vacation.

airbnb is legit, about to take one in the interim between apartments, also got a nice offer not too long ago, but im hanging on for two more final rounds

make sure you book monthly, you can get rates just over a mid-high rental in the area in most places

>> No.16410347

>>16410279
Yes kind of. It’s only going to be weird if you make it weird. You need to choose your words carefully. Just say something to the degree of “Hey I was able to figure out my living situation more quickly than I anticipated, so if you guys want me to start earlier, I am able to.” Just something like that. Just give them the choice. Obviously make sure you can actually start earlier though. If you then have to tell them after again you need to wait it’s going to be weird.

>> No.16410366

>>16410279
Just to clarify yes the Airbnb idea is kind of dumb, but letting them you’re able to work earlier isn’t a horrible idea. I would def work on a more permanent living situation first. Just go to Craigslist and find a cheap room to rent if you don’t want to shell out for an apartment.

>> No.16410442

>>16410308
>Can you afford it?
Yes, easily.

>Do you have any other option?
It's kind of hard to find a place to rent for 3-ish months (seems idiotic to commit to a 12 month let on a place when I don't know if the job will work out) when I live 300+ miles away from where my new job is. Plus, there's also the fact that landlords probably wont like the fact that I'm currently unemployed.

>>16410347
They initially asked if I could start in early December so I don't think it would be an issue for them? I think they're keen to get someone on-board ASAP.

>>16410366
>Just to clarify yes the Airbnb idea is kind of dumb
Why? Not being a prick just genuinely don't know why.

I don't see why living in a temporary place with access to a bed, washing machine, kitchen etc. is any different to moving into a new place anyway.

>> No.16410478

>>16410442
>why is Airbnb dumb
Just because it’s not normally more economical than renting a room or an apartment. Obviously I don’t know what you researched and idk the numbers you’ve ran. But if it’s economical then do what you have to do.
I mean you’re also going to have to find more permanent housing at some point so you’re just leaving that as an unknown variable. A lot of times when renting an apartment/room you’re going to have to wait a month or more. Probably not a great idea to airbnb for that long.

>> No.16410508

>>16410478
It's London and I can afford 1200 a month in rent. An Air BnB that's in a half-decent area with a private bathroom and a room that isn't awful is about that much, so I guess I'm not losing anything other than security? To find more permanent housing I'd need to view it in person, go through referencing, pay deposits etc.

Also, I get really anxious about sitting around waiting to start a new job. I get worried that my references will fall through, or that I'll fail a background check, or that they'll change their mind etc. I'd rather just start ASAP and get it out the way.

Okay, I'll bite, gonna need sauce on OP's picture. Reverse image search only turned up this cute Apoojeet GIF.
I assume it's an American Apparel shoot from circa 2011/2 but am no closer to figuring out the young woman's name or finding the photoshoot.

Most areas have extended stay type places for exactly this scenario. They're expensive in big cities, but reasonable in smaller cities. I moved across the states looking for a job, and I negotiated $60 a night at an extended stay place for a guaranteed 3 month booking in off season (winter). Start calling places and see what they offer for a 3 month booking.

Yeah so? I have an interview with a place I suspect is trying to hire me before Christmas. Intend to delay it to after New Year's cause I know they can demand I work holidays, undesirable hours such as nights and weekends, and overtime. It's an office job which is ridiculous in what they demand. If I don't get it I'm not worried job is clearly a stepping stone that would be burdensome to stay at for even a year.

im in a similar situation as op. i got a job offer last week and told them i could start on the 9th of december after i find an apartment (its an hour and a half away from where I live). now i think i might need more time because i dont wanna waste more money on an airbnb till i actually find a place. would it be out of line to email the company monday and as to start maybe the monday after the 9th? searching for an apartment is a lot more annoying than i thought especially with this week being thanksgiving.
