Of the eight interviews, a lot of them were last week or early this week, but I've got nothing back yet. Only two of them were second stage interviews.

Jobs I've had in the past I usually get offered them the day after the interview.

Hopefully I get some calls back before I've hit 500+ applications. Is networking my best bet?

Pretty much all I've done in my free time besides learning random shit is watch anime and trade stocks. My trading record is actually pretty solid at +86% over the past 3 years. I've made enough to pay off half my student loans, but I'm not trading with a lot of capital.

Even more applications. Re apply to the good ones. Figure out what went wrong. Was it qualifications? Do you need to work on how you present your resume? Maybe you have trouble in person, there are tactics to improve your interview skills. Try working for yourself it's not for everyone but think about something in life that can be improved and sell that improvement. Do all that and once you get the job KYS.

Mostly real estate development and acquisition roles with the plan of moving into real estate private equity after MBA/Masters.

Private equity, hedge funds, and investment banking roles are way too competitive, and you can get pigeonholed into back/middle office very easily. Its a lot easier to move from a shitty real estate analyst position into a high paying sales/development/valuation role, and you can jump ship and start a company very easily. Pay isn't even that much worse in commercial real estate than banking due to compensation structure being tied to deals.

Go on LinkedIn and search/add people that went to the same college as you. Create a template that you can message to every single one of them - something generic, short, and to the point. Straight up ask them to help you out if they know any contacts within their company our outside of their company that they can point you towards. You will get more responses than you expect. Generally, fellow alumni will go out of their way to help you if they know you don't have a job and are struggling to find one. However, I would make some small shit up that would not necessarily have to be true in order for you to succeed at the opportunity - such as freelance/internship work etc..

Also, look for smaller companies that are recruiters/headhunters that pace candidates in the industry and line of work you're looking for. These small recruiting firms (maybe 4-5 employees) make a living by essentially lying for you - they can't compete with the large recruiting firms that follow all the 'rules', so they have to do what they can to get paid and stay competitive because most recruiters/firms only get paid if they successfully place a candidate. As an example - I had a friend from college who couldn't find a job in over a year after graduating and he found a small firm like I mentioned. The recruiter didn't 100% lie, but they really over-sell you to companies they place candidates for. Some of them even act as fake references - as long as they see you are a competent person who could realistically do great in the job they place you in, even if you may not be the 'most experienced'. If their clients were not happy with the candidates they recommend/place, they would not have a job and would not be talking to you in the first place.

>>16326352
To add, the reasoning behind picking real estate finance as an industry over traditional high finance roles is due to less structural barriers, and more transferable skills.

People also jump ship all the time to start their own development, brokerage, syndication firms. You aren't tied to a single company or role. There is value to extract out of the market everywhere. Investment opportunities are fragmented and local.

>> No.16326409

>>16326376
Yeah, interesting. I didn't really network in college. I've considered just working for free with small developers to gain experience.

I could probably work my ass off and go from making $0/minimum wage to 60-70K + bonus within 1-2 years, and then my compensation should only go up from there.

Literally nothing you said is negative in the slightest. Have you just started on your job hunting after having graduated?

Let me show you on the other hand how my experience went (and I'm only 25),
> sent 300+ applications, with good résumé and academic credentials
> got 1 job interview
> 0 jobs

Only finally got a job after someone I actively networked with, while sending the above, decided to give me a helping hand, and despite not being able to offer me any position congruent with my background, he gave me a minor role simply to give me résumé experience, and nearly a year after that, a recruiter found me through my profile on Linkedin. After that, I aced the interviews which the recruiter set up, and *then* I finally landed a real job.

Having 8 interviews from 72 job applications is actually a pretty high rate, anon, so you must still be a babby in this whole process. Just kep trying, and most importantly keep networking.

I studied Math/Economics in undergrad, and then graduated with a MS in Quantitative Finance, with decent grades, and it was still hard for me to find a job.

As I wrote in a reply to OP, it takes a long time to get a job sometimes, and always make networking your #1 strategy.

>"what have you been doing since you finished your studies?"
The number 1 way to answer that question is to be working on something you find interesting in the field you studied on your own. If you put enough effort into it (note: this doesn't require autistic effort or inhuman discipline), you will start amassing projects to put on your résumé, so at least you will have something.

This is encouraging. I can model complex institutional M&A/LBO transactions, but it seems like running into a brick wall through the traditional application processes. Am I just getting autodenied by ATS's for not having any work experience?

I feel if I could meet with recruiters and show them some of my models, pitch books, and slide decks they would be impressed at the least. Too bad most of the HR people are women that don't actually understand the technical aspect of whatever jobs I'm applying to. Smaller companies are probably my best bet in that case.

>less than 1.75% of those application result in an interview
>less than 0.4% chance of applying to a job AND getting the job albeit I did skip a few interviews/passed on a few but not enough for it to realistically reach a 0.7% chance

Keep developing your models, work on understanding and explaining them in common-sense, understandable language, and if you keep practicing all that and networking (either going to events, as it worked out for me with meeting the guy that helped me out, or even with seeking out recruiters), you eventually will catch someone's attention.

However, and I cannot stress this enough, working on your hard knowledge on topics you can force yourself to study + presentation skills while looking for those jobs is what's going to give you what you need to ace those interviews, once they come. For my 2 year job-hunting process altogether, my first year I spent learning Bayesian statistics (because it seemed really cool, and I still think it's cool), then did some standard Neural Network courses on coursera for a couple months, and all this was while endlessly applying and just hoping for the best. Meeting people (so working on presentation skills) and those hard skills above all gave me stuff to talk about and be well-rounded about when I finally got that interview 2 years later.

I got a Junior Quant coding job at Wells Fargo, which I'm really happy about because the work is flexible and will give me a lot of experience in derivatives as well as coding.

If I may ask, what kinds of models does Catastrophe Modelling entail?

>>16326496
While that is a true statement on the surface, you will only get that interview if you meet enough people and get close enough to them for you to demonstrate your skills somehow, which will most likely simply involve you being able to explain those hard skills confidently and concisely. I hate this aspect about the modern world, but networking is how any real jobs are attained these days.

I have a couple of years' experience working in bids/pitches/proposals at big companies, which isn't much but it's something. I'm wanting to stay in this area of marketing/this type of job unless /biz/ convinces me otherwise, because:
