Never really thought about that, but you're right. It is kind of weird. It's probably because he has a personality that keeps people at a distance and even if they get close, very few people are on his level of intellect and understanding of bitcoin. A lot of what he has been working on would probably seem like something completely unrelated to bitcoin even for hardcore bitcoin devs.
