What evidence is there that we are any closer to a deal now than we were 6 months ago? There isn't any other than constant what if and maybe scenarios coming out of both sides.
Neither side is going to appear to lose face on this deal, so there will be no deal, because someone has to give for the other to get, and that will not happen here.

I'll explain it a little more clearly. Everything you bought was long volatility. As volatility fell the price of your contracts fell with respect to volatility, you also paid for time, so as time passed you paid for the time. Since there were no real significant moves, the value on those contracts continued to erode. The demand for your hedges fell with the fall in volatility since when volatility is low people tend to hedge less and just let their shit grow in value.

If you were to buy that and immediately sell you're losing 10 bucks per contract. There's your 20% loss right there out of the gate. that's what an index is
and index isn't a concrete financial instrument that you go out and buy, it is a technical concept, and abstraction

also you CAN go out and buy all of the shares of the companies in the index at their weights, or whatever weights you want, right now... if you want to "buy the index", that's how you do it. Or you can buy shares of an ETF or MTF that does that for you....

I don't know how spreads work when buying partial shares, but uhhhh I encourage your experiment.
please try it and keep detailed logs of the transactions so that we can parse it and find out how hard it slips from the buy-in
I've never bought a partial share of anything in my LIFE

of course you understand that it will only be an equally weighted SPX for the moment that you buy in, and every day that goes by will increase the errors in your distribution as the values of all the underlyings changes

Because why sell if you have a good enough entry to just sit on the trade? If he bought at 52 for example, then there's plenty of levels to go through to even get down there again. But that's why I asked for the strategy aswell, because when you enter a trade you should always plan what kind of trade it is so you know when to sell.. or else you'll risk getting stuck. You should always have a sell ready if it breaks below a certain level that usually leads to more downward movements and by the looks of it, that's roughly 58 on SNE.
I'm not gonna make a call for him, but it does look like SNE will test the highs again and there's no reason to sell now imo
