Their problem has always been finding ways to distribute the token, since there's so god damn much of it. they've had a number or airdrops over the years and a number of them have been abused. the recent keybase one for example was canceled after a few days because anons were spamming the airdrop. they are burning the supply to avoid the continued distribution chore.
