Stay on track, know your core gameplay loop and avoid over-complicating things because it'll just push back your release without adding any substance to the game. Being an indie dev means long hours too, basically crunch-time all the time if you want to go full-time. If you just want to do it as a side project, then keep it simple and tight and set milestones. Math skills are important, programming is important, and being able to innovate is important. Charm is the most important, even shit games get fans if they're charming, and your games are going to be shit games for a while.
