Chainlink nodes only comes with a few default adapters, they can perform tasks such as HttpGet and HttpPost just to name a couple. If you want to perform tasks beyond the default ones you need to use an external adapter. An external adapter is needed if for example you want to fetch something from a private database or private token API.
