#1

(((They))) are printing dollars nonstop, stealing purchasing power from people's savings.

Bitcoin was made to counter this. There can only be 21 million bitcoins, ever.

Gold used to work for that purpose, but (((they))) created paper gold, and started printing those too. Paper gold is supposedly backed by real gold, but there is no way to check.

Bitcoin mitigates this because you don't need to use a broker, you can trade it to other people directly.

#2

Also, it's decentralized. Meaning no one can freeze your accounts or seize your account.

Decentralized means there is no central server the government can subpoena, unlike with PayPal or Visa.

They have to shutdown all computers in the world running Bitcoin to stop it.

...
...there, that should fit in however short of a time he is willing to give you.
That's the entire gist of it.

If you don't wanna look autistic, don't explain more stuff, like private/public keys, mining, proof-of-work, halvings etc.
Nobody cares about that.

My father has been 'retired' for 23 years now. He is currently dying of ass cancer. I've been trying to make sense of his very complex finances and as part of that been getting into some VERY SIMPLE shit. Like having a platform, paying fees, buying some traded funds etc.

He literally sees stocks and shares like ... a bit of fun to pass the time and keep you interested in the markets, developing technology, economic opportunities, current affairs and to encourage you to do some research, talk to other people, develop interests and network. I guess in a way it gives us something to talk about as well?

I'm like ... shit no it is about making it. He is like lol not a get rich quick scheme, just some fun to make it worth reading the papers and give you some shit to talk about with taxi drivers, pick up the odd hint, feel good about stuff, lose some, gain some etc. Crypto to him is like ... impressive growth, ridiculous concept which doesn't seem real.

He is most likely right. Crypto looks to me like volatility which means a chance to make money if you are prepared to basically gamble or play very safe positions. Like most gambling if you play for long enough you will probably lose all of it.

What puts me off the most is I can see myself buying and selling and realising a minor profit over time, but in what currency? Like I take my stake and buy a volatile and potentially worthless currency to pair against and trade my target currency and over time with risk I might have the value of my stake + some profit both of which are still held in a volatile and potentially worthless currency? I think if it was directly converted to fiat I'd understand it better because I can understand the purchasing power and historic value of fiat.

Are you an F body? If so, its probably either that your dad doesnt respect you because of your body type or he is utterly ashamed of himself as a father because of the way you turned out or both. For me, I think we're definitely more secure with a currency that literally tracks everything we buy, forever, being secured by a math formula which stays secure only because we think it would take too long to crack the code.
Nevermind Moore's Law. Nevermind that cracking one of the codes would literally expose the entire history to that point. Nevermind that government's across the globe have literal vested interests in cracking these things, they're probably totally secure.

i feel like you're kinda arguing in bad faith here but i agree its at least plausible for bitcoin to be broken so to speak

>Nevermind that government's across the globe have literal vested interests in cracking these things, they're probably totally secure.

true but i doubt they can do it, plus i'd imagine you're assuming all governments will end up on the same side of this fight. what if one government wants to destroy it and another doesn't? i think it will be too difficult for them to manage. i unironically believe the biggest users of monero will end up being governments, for example.
