Blockchain has practical uses as well as being used for cryptocurrency. But even when the cryptocurrency has some of the practical uses built in, the disadvantages are so big that it makes more sense to use blockchain without it.

Except you can't have smart contracts without crypto. You need a decentralized platform like ethereum to use them (and a decentralized oracle network to boot). It is one of the usecases where decentralization is non-negotiable.
