sure, parties could build and maintain all of the infrastructure needed to make trusted api calls for every transaction they make and just hope that everyone they do business with will do the same and agree to that arrangement

Depends on the contract issuer, the point is that almost always a better level of trustlessness can be attained by private nodes owned by multiple parties.

Link's solution to doing this inherently requires trust and is prone to manipulation. Less benefit, higher cost, not an oracle.

oops, looks like a hacker manipulated api data by attacking enough of your private nodes to stage a Sybil attack, looks like you just lost a few million dollars. I know it’s a tough time, but there was also a node outage earlier in the day during some critical transactions and now we’re financially liable, if only there had been some kind of system of collateral to cover us in this exact situation. not to pile on, but our customers don’t have the means to maintain their own individual oracles to match verify our api data, and our retention has gone way down as they jump to competitors that use trustless oracles. the time and money spent developing our private oracle network was well-spent though, if it means we don’t have to rely on chainlink
