If they raised the block size for BTC, it would have caused a chain split, and a lot of miners would have still supported the 1 MB chain because there would be more money to be made from transaction fees. This would have tanked the price of both versions of BTC massively, just as BCH tanked after the BCHABC and BCHSV split.
BCH could have survived for a lot longer and in the very long run taken over BTC if not for that split.
Bitcoin was doomed the moment Satoshi added in the 1 MB limit in 2010.
