Anyone have any good side business ideas? My main business has long purchasing cycles so I need something to fill the gaps that doesn't require a lot of upfront capital.

I do tutoring for young primary school kids. My clients are mostly Chinese tiger mums who want to push their kids. They want white, native english speakers with a batchelor degree. But cos their kids are young, the maths and English is pretty easy to teach. Just got to learn how to sell yourself as a tutor to tiger mums

I charge $50 for two hours. But it's with 4 kids per class. Private is $75 for 2 hours. But my prices are a bit low cos I've just started by myself. I used to work for a Chinese lady who ran a tutoring business where I learnt how to deal with Chinese mums. They are a real pain in the ass and they don't much care for 'holistic' education or anything that's not trying to make them the best. For example, I wanted to see were a students ability was by taking away the scaffolding I usually give for a homework task. Mum was pretty mad even though I explained that sometimes I need to give diagnostic tests to students to check learning but she didn't want to hear it. It gets easier to once you learn to use big words to explain your curriculum and just give tons of work for them to do that focuses on making them do well on standadise tests.

In general though I stand by the statement that the Chinese are hyper-aware of comparative social status. And they will treat you very differently depending on how they perceive your status relative to theirs and be quite open about that.

If they are paying you they'll see you like a servant almost. Not a respectful relationship usually.
