Binance.us has more pairs, deposits arrive IMMEDIATELY (you just can't withdraw for 10 days to prevent bank disputes, etc). and so far it has been great. Volume is a little thinner perhaps, but it's grown a lot. Say what you will about ChinkyZebra, but Binance has a ton more going for it than GoldmanBase.

I'm trying to figure it out too. Apparently shorting is when you take out a loan of a crypto or stock so you can trade it. But I dont get what op did exactly. Did he buy at 8600 sold at the bottom around 7400 and is now sad that it pumped to 10k?

>> No.16036434

You borrow the btc to trade in a short sell. You sell right after borrowing it in anticipation of a price drop. If the price drops, great you buy back more btc at the lower price and pay back your lender and pocket the leftovers. If the price goes up you cant buy the same amount of btc that you borrowed without dipping into your margin. Once the price rises past a certain point (approximately 4%) past your initial sell point the position and all your margin is liquidated.

>> No.16036447

not sure how shorting shitcoins works, but shorting is borrowing a stock, selling it when it goes down and then buying it back at a lower price to return it to from whom you borrowed. They get their stock returned and you pocket the difference.

No because he sold the borrowed btc immediately after borrowing. In this case around 7600. If the price goes up he still has to pay back the lender IN btc not usd.
Example:
Borrow 1btc on 50x leverage at a current price of $10000 and sell that btc for $10000.
The price goes down to 9000. You could now take the 10000 you got for selling the borrowed btc and buy back the 1btc for 9000 and keep the extra 1000.
You get greedy though and think it will continue to drop. Now the price suddenly shoots up to 12000. You only have 10000 but owe someone 1btc, which you can no longer afford. The exchange now closes you position and takes your initial collateral to pay for the losses.

>> No.16036729

Yes that's why margin trading can be good. The most you can loose is the initial amount you used for the loan. With normal trading of high amounts you could potentially loose a lot even with a stop loss if there in not enough liquidity in the market to close your position after a massive price move. With margin even if theres no liquidity to close the trade you still only lose that initial amount. However, the margin for error is significantly reduced. If your trading your own money you can go into the red indefinitely if you expect it to go back into the green at some point. With margin you can only go as far into a losing position as you can pay back with your margin.

All trading is gambling to a point, but especially crypto due to the increased manipulation and volatility. The randomness of markets can be mitigated by learning how to analyze charts and current events. Theres a reason some people consistantly make ridiculous sums of money trading, and it's not because of luck. There are certain patterns and strategies to maximize profit and minimize loss.

>> No.16037026

>>16036613
It depends on the exchange. BitMex is unique that you can isolate your position. But I think for every other platform. Your losses add up untill you can't take more and the broker closes your position out aka liquidation. And yes sometimes you can go into debt shorting/longing when something goes against you.

There have been scenario's where a stock for example gets delisted and someone still holds a short. He needs to buy back the stock he shorted to return to the lender. Only there's nothing to buy back cause the stock isn't trading anymore. So he's stuck paying the interest on his position and there have been traders who went bankrupt because of this.

Just stay away from leverage/margin. It's fucking stupid unless you know what you're getting yourself into. And you might have an idea you do. But you don't.
