Gold is not nearly as volatile as silver, not that that's saying much. That said, if you're hedging against some sort of currency devaluation nightmare scenario, you're better off hoarding off pennies and nickels since those are less likely to hit by something like a rehash of Executive Order 6102 or 6814 and they'll always have melt value independent of their nominal worth.

As a simple exercise to explain how this works, the federal government made it illegal after 2005 to melt pennies and nickels down domestically and in 2007 to take more than $5 in pennies or nickels out of the country at a time. A pre-1982 penny's melt value is currently worth about 1.7x its face value. If we were to assume that the dollar were to abruptly lose half of its value but the real value of copper were constant, you could trade the pennies off for their melt value in copper, since once the denomination is withdrawn from circulation thanks to being too expensive to produce, nobody will care whether or not you melt them down anymore. Additionally, if you had some way of avoiding getting killed by shipping, you could sell a packet of 500 internationally at a time, dodging the export laws, while netting you their melt value, which earns you $17 worth of devaluated dollars that you can use to convert into a harder asset.

Yeah, that's actually the better route to go to for a hedge. The composition of a nickel has literally been unchanged since 1946, so if the dollar ever depreciated to the point of a nickel having a consistent melt value of at or above 5 cents, you could lock in your value just by running out to the bank and converting your mattress cash to nickel rolls.

It saves you the tedium of having to pick out increasingly rare 95% copper pennies from a sea of plated zinc trash (not that they couldn't potentially have value as a hedge themselves given enough time), and is a lot more space-conscious.
