Many such cases!

I mean, he bought for like $10 each.
Ignoring the fact that it's 80 cents now...

- it spiked to $21 in Dec.19 before dipping to $14 a week after
- it spiked AGAIN to $26 in Jan.8, before dipping to $8 a month after
- it spiked again to $20 on Feb.28 before falling to $8 a month after
- it rose again to $20 on Apr.26 before falling forever

He had PLENTY of chances to cash out at x2.5 his money.

Seeing as how he had a timeline of 6 months to repay the loan, and this happened like 3 months after, chances are high he actually made out like a bandit.

Unless he reFOMOd into the ATH after selling the first spike...I can't see how he could've lost here.

Unless he was a total dumbass and held it to a dollar after all those spikes and crashes.
I mean, nobody here was that stupid, right...?

I remember this convo. We were at $700 shortly after the bubble, and this guy refused to believe that we could even reach $100, so he had his entire retirement fund in ETH. Sure enough, half a year later we were below $100. He was a regular poster in the eth sub, then he suddenly stopped. Maybe he an hero'ed.

So glad my bubble euphoria wore off after the new year and started researching the fuck out of taxes and cashed out. I had 85 BTC and my ATH was 1.6 million. Down to 900k and I woke up and cashed out. Tax liability was split into two years and used an accounting method that preserved long term capital gain and also started a business and took deductions. I hired a very sophisticated accountant and paid 17% taxes.

>> No.15983458

why would he owe that much in taxes when he’d lost over 600k

>> No.15983474

>>15983458
Because crypto to crypto trades trigger capital gains in the fair market value of them in dollars. And when the tax year ended his gains on paper were extremely high. Then it dumped and he can't deduct the loss from the previous year.

hmm, unless I’m misreading what the IRS says, it seems like it counts as a loss if the fair market value of the exchange is less than what you originally paid for the asset? I hope that’s the case, otherwise it seems really dumb to get taxed for “selling” your stack at a loss

>> No.15983825

1. About 750k networth.
2. Just to suffer. Also I want to be a multi-millionaire.

>>15983699
>>15983778
You get taxed on whatever gains you've realized at the end of the year. So if you sold at a high price at some point in the year but you don't loss harvest at the end of the year or you don't cash out enough for the taxes and it crashes, then you're fucked.

>> No.15983856

>>15983778
>You buy $1000 worth of BTC
>It goes up in value to $10k and then you trade for ETH in June.
>You now have a $9000 capital gain liability.
>If the year ends and you don't do anything else you'll owe that no matter what the price is after.
>If the value of the ETH goes down before the end of the year you should loss harvest by trading it or cashing it out so it subtracts from your capital gains.
>If it stays high you should cash out enough to cover the capital gains tax in case it crashes after that year because you can't deduct from previous years.
