What are the implications of this? It’s my impression that Indians prefer to hodl their pms for generations.

Lol no implication. It's just tradition to invest wealth in the form of gold ornaments or bullion at the time of marriage, festival or any major occasion.

And the goal is to never sell it. Selling gold means you're bascially bankrupt and it's very dishonourable. It's meant to go from one generation to the next. Indians are the true Hodlers

Thanks for the info, that’s kinda what I thought. It does have implications on the physical market though: if they hold forever and buy at pretty much any price, it’s a constant source of demand/price support. If there’s some threshold price at which people would start selling en masse, that would definitely move the market. It’s complicated by the economic situation in India, obviously, with them having to transact in rupees or whatever, but presumably there would be a point where people would start divesting into cash, right?

Yes you make sense. However people won't ever sell gold that's the point. Nobody here puts money into gold with the intention of getting returns out of it. They do it because again it's a traditional thing.

My family carries jewellery of my great grandmother. It's necklaces and bangles around 4 pounds I would guess. And still we buy at whatever marriage or function comes up.

Recently prices in India boomed due to increase in import taxes on Gold. People were buying too much and India pretty much imports all of its gold so govt. had to put some restrictions.

Prices have incrased 30% since then and nobody is selling instead still continue to buy. Idk why the fuck I told you all this but I'm just giving you input into the local mindset. May help to whomever interested in doing research or wharever.
