When did you realize collecting fossils was more valuable than buying precious metals? They're the most scarce commodity on the planet and their value will only ever increase. They also offer passive income from loaning them out.
About a year ago I started collecting them. Currently I have one Triceratops skull (it cost $80,000) and several Stegasaurus spikes. Looking to pick up a T-Rex skull soon, but those are harder to find for sale from a reputable dealer.
Pic related, it's my dad and my Triceratops skull. I loaned it to a local museum for an exhibit of theirs for $10,000.

Do you insure the skull incase Pablo down at the local museum tilts it over when moving it to the showroom?

In a loan agreement with a museum they typically agree to reimburse the full value plus 10 percent if something gets fucked. I don't loan it if that's not in place

What makes a dealer reputable? Do you mind sharing who you buy from?

This is unquestionably the most patrician thread I've ever seen. How do you control for fake Chinese fossils?

Fossils will be inspected and studied and if a private collector gets ahold of them then they'll request papers if they aren't stupid. You can verify the papers and get fossils inspected by third party paleontologists. The seller should be okay with it and if they aren't then it's likely fake and you'll get China plastic, so avoid them. You can unironically find them on eBay but I haven't looked into that. I noticed a Triceratops skull going for $75k but didn't look at the listing's details so I don't know how they're going about verifying authenticity

I've been interested in dinosaurs since I was a kid. Mind boggling to think about

Another thing to note: Usually fossils are a percentage of bone and cast metal. The higher percentage of actual bone the more valuable. The skull in my possession is 70% bone 30% cast metal. To answer the dealer question, you can find them on the internet. I know a paleontologist who knows private collectors and that's how I do my majority of browsing for acquisitions. He lets me know any time one of them wants to sell something. You can find fully fossilized skeletons of smaller dinosaurs in the $50k range which I've been considering but the Triceratops has sentimental value to me so that's what I went with first. I'd want to research any dinosaurs I pick up a full skeleton of first so I feel like it's more valuable than just an asset

I would buy one for that price. Not even kidding. That's cheap for something that will never come back. What year did you buy it OP? And do you feel the same?
I would say dinos are a good investment.

Anon. We are limited people as human beings but we often try to make ourselves the god of our own life. Realize that being your own god isn't the solution. We cannot fill our own void that is missing. Just like a dry lake can't fill itself, we needs a source to pour into us. Jesus is that answer anon. Not even kidding.
